what kind of bulb do they use in most digital cameras? LED? Xenon? or some other type?
if possible for the canon ixus 55 model
Digital cameras, including Canon IXUS 55, use xenon flash lamp. As xenon flash lamp's illumination time is very short it is suitable only for snap shots, not for video cameras. Though xenon flash requires a couple hundred volts to operate, it consumes very low energy and therefore camera battery can charge it via built-in electronic circuit which raises the voltage to required level. To use for continuous illumination it needs a low of energy which is not available from compact devices such as digital cameras.
When the flash is triggered electrons move from -ve to +ve terminal and collide with other atoms in the flash tube, causing these atoms to lose electrons and therefore increase the number of speeding electrons. These electrons collide with xenon atoms, which become energized and generate light.
LED could be used both in flash mode and torch mode (continuous mode) and therefore is good for both snap shots and videos. However, due to unfavorable size/power ratio LED is used only for flash with short distance such as mobile phone cameras.
