Why does wet sand light up when you agitate it?
I just got back from a trip to the beach, and I remembered something my mom showed me when I was little. If you scratch wet sand, or at the edge of waves that wash up, it lights up like a little sand rave. I think there are little critters that light up when you mess with them. What are these critters called? Or, if they're not critters, what is it?
The phenomenon that you witnessed could be something called BIOLUMINESENCE.
Basically it is light produced by a bio-chemical reaction to oxygen, which originates in an organism. There are 1000's of bioluminescent species and most are planktonic within the marine environment, but, sometimes can be found in some freshwater species, but almost always found in water, though there are some terrestrial (land)species that use bioluminescence, such as fireflys and glow worms. Marine species include organisms from bacteria, dinflagellates, diatoms, green algae to jellyfish and fish. It can be found in all colors - red, orange, yellow, green, blue and violet. No-one really quite knows why it exists, but there are a few theoretical reasons, such as,
- communication/courtship purposes
- light may reveal food or lure prey
- organisms with poorly developed or nonexistent eyes may use light to blind oe startle predators.
