How to Make a Clock Out of a Record
If you keep up with decorating trends then you know that retro is back in a big way. People are snapping up antiques the way they used to shop for cutting edge modern pieces. This trend is great for you and your budget because retro is so affordable. If you want to add your own touches to a retro-looking room, making your very own record clock is a great way to do it. The best part is that it's incredibly easy and cheap!

Step One: Go Shopping
Here's a list of what you'll need.
1. A record. You can purchase one for a dollar at any thrift store. Make sure it's a LP and not a 45. The holes in 45's are too big for the clock piece!
2. Craft glue. My personal favorite is Mod Podge- gloss. It lasts forever and can be used for multiple projects, including this.
3. A craft knife like Exacto. You can get one for about four or five dollars and they're great for precision cutting delicate paper. I use mine all the time for multiple projects.
4. A small paintbrush with a tip no wider than your pinkie finger. You can get a pack at any dollar store.
5. A Spray Lacquer like Minwax or Rust-Oleum.
6. A 3/8 inch clock kit. You'll want the kit with the mechanical pieces, clock hands and numbers.
7. A power drill and
8. A small block of wood.
9. One AA battery.
10. A vintage magazine. You can get one for a dollar or two from an antique store. Vintage ads make for great decor. To get an idea of what I mean, click here.
Step Two: Create Your Collage
The collage on the vinyl part of your clock is what will create a one-of-a-kind look for your clock. If you prefer to leave the clock as-is, skip this step. Start by cutting out the pieces you want to use with your craft knife. Cut some pieces a little larger and cut smaller pieces more intricately. This will make it easier to cover the entire clock.
Once you have all of your pieces cut, arrange them on the clock without gluing. Then paste each piece of paper together using a small dab of glue without attaching them to the clock. The less you use, the better. You can always add more later. Decoupaging is a creative process and you may change your mind about how you want things layered. It's easier to undo a mistake if you don't use a lot of glue. You will also want to arrange pieces so that the label of the record still shows. You can always go back with your Exacto knife and cut away stray edges of paper that cover the label. Once you have your collage the way you want it, take small amounts of Mod Podge and attach the collage to the record around the edges. Again, when it comes to the glue, less is more!
Step Three: Add the Finishing Touches
If you want to use the numbers provided with the clock, now is the time to attach them. Dab the back of each number with a small amount of Mod Podge and arrange them around the clock face. Cover each number with a small amount of the glue as well.
Are there any collage pieces that won't lie flat? Cover the edges with small dab of glue. Once you're finished, let all glue dry for another hour, then use your spray lacquer to cover the entire clock face. You'll want to do this outside because it can get a little messy and smelly. The spray lacquer will make the clock shiny, make sure the numbers don't fall off and will also protect the very delicate paper you're using.
Step Four: Install the Clock Parts
The thing that's kind of annoying about using records for this purpose is that the hole is almost the right size on it's own. Unfortunately, unless you have an unusually sized clock kit, it won't work on it's own. What you'll want to do now (after the clock is dry, of course) is drill the hole in the middle of your record to be slightly larger. This is where the small block of wood comes in. Place it behind the hole and drill through the record and into the wood. Now your hole should be big enough.
Follow the directions on the back of the clock kit for installing the parts and attaching the clock hands. Now you're done and you have a one-of-a-kind clock to decorate your home!
