im stuck on two problems?
ok plz help i dont know these ive been doing math all day out teacher is crazy lol.
1. the egyptions used high rollers to move the blocks that went into the pyriamids. suppose a block is supported on two rollers each 21 cm in diameter. how far can the block advance in one complete revoulution of the rollers?
2. a box with a square base and no top is to be made from a square peice by cutting out a 3-inch square from each corner and folding up the sides. if the box is to hold 48in.cubed, what size peice of tin should be used? thank you so much!
1)The block will advance a distance equal to one revolution of the roller, which is equal to the circumference of it. The circumference, C, is given by C = D x pi, so
C = 21 x 3.14 cm,
C = 65.94 cm,
So the block advances 65.94 cm in one complete revolution of the rollers.
2)Let the side of the square piece from which the box is to be made be x inches long. Cutting pieces each 3-inches long from each corner means that the length and width of the box will both be (x-6) inches, and the height will be 3 inches. So the volume of the box is 3 x (x-6) x (x-6), and since this is equal to 48, then:
3(x-6)^2 = 48, so
3(x^2-12x+36) = 48, so
3x^2 - 36x + 108 = 48, so
3x^2 - 36x + 60 = 0, so
x^2 - 12x + 20 = 0, so
(x-10)(x-2) = 0, so
x-10 = 0, OR x -2 = 0, so
x = 10, OR x = 2
x = 2 is impoossible, so
x = 10.
Hence, the size of the piece of tin which should be used is
10 inches by 10 inches.
