History Of Mack Trucks
For over 100 years Mack Trucks has proven itself as a reliable and innovative truck manufacturing company.
The Beginning
Before the idea for Mack Trucks came into Jack Mack's head he was working for a wagon and carriage company by the name of Fallesen and Berry. He purchased the company three years later with his brother Augustus. While this business never took off due to a struggling economy and economic hardships, the brothers still created a name for themselves as top quality wagon repairmen, and followed the evolution of steam and gas powered engines with their own experiments in self propelled vehicles.
During those early days trucks were cobbled together with old car parts, as opposed to parts that are specifically designed for their heavy duty purpose. While most automotive people were focused on the fledgling car industry, the Mack brothers experimented with heavier duty engines and custom truck parts.
Old No. 1
The first vehicle to successfully establish the Mack name was a Mack bus that came to be known as "Old No. 1." It was designed as a sightseeing bus that toured around Prospect Park in Brooklyn for over 8 years before being converted to a truck. During that entire time their prototype bus accumulated over a million miles and launched a reputation for excellence and quality that the Mack Truck name carries on today.
Bulldog is Born
During the first World War, the Mack AC truck was used by the British military to move supplies and equipment to their soldiers on the front lines. The soldiers began to call the trucks "Bulldog Macks" in reference to the British Bulldog, which is the country's mascot. This was due to the reliability and durability of the Mack truck in such tough conditions. A few years after the war the Bulldog became the official logo for the Mack Trucking Company.
Mack Trucks Today
Today's Mack trucks still carry the legacy of high quality construction and innovative engineering. With their primary facility for manufacturing in Macungie, Pennsylvania and a recent corporate headquarters move to Greensboro, NC, Mack has built themselves up as one of the top producers of heavy duty off road trucks, Class 8 to 13, on road trucks, and vocational vehicles. Whether it is a construction site or long stretch of highway, you will see the Mack Bulldog emblem almost anywhere you go. But, it's the part that you don't see that can really set a Mack apart. Advanced engines like the MP7 and MP8 allow for more horsepower, while conserving fuel and reducing emissions that affect the environment.
Mack is an American born brand that has proven itself for over 100 years. The history of Mack trucks, from the invention of the first bus to today's many different models, marks this manufacturer of heavy duty trucks as one of the premier vehicle companies in the world.
