refinishing a 1950's Tiki Bar that has mold on it?
My wife has a Tiki bar the her mom got before she was born. It has wood on the bottom, wicker all the way around and bamboo half rounds Vertical all the way around. I can do the wood part no problem. I do not want to remove the Vertical bamboo as I don't think it would go back on very well. There is mold in the Wicker and on the bamboo. I was thinking of spraying it with a 15 % bleach solution but am not sure if this would ruin the wicker. Also what would you suggest to cover or stain the wicker and bamboo with? just thompson's water seal? or is there a better product to use? My Wife would kill me if I ruined this bar! Also it is out side by our pool so I need weather proofing also. Thanks for any advice or suggestion's.
As long as you prep them the same you can finish wicker and bamboo just like wood. Since this is an outdoor piece be sure to finishes made for exterior application. If stain and varnish then you may want to look into a marine finish for weather protection.
A bleach solution won't hurt the wicker or bamboo but there is a slight chance it may have an effect on the color so try on a hidden spot first.
