Test Kit
If I'm showing nitrate on my test kit, is it safe to put my fish in my new fish aquarium? Has it fully cycled?
I set up a new fish tank a week ago. I put the used, dirty filter from my old tank in my new filter in the new tank. I also have a scoop of the old tank's gravel in a net floating in the tank. It's only been a week since I set it up, but it's already showing nitrate on the test kit. Is it safe to go ahead and put my little friends in their new tank?
Have you been adding a source of ammonia?
If you have, and it's being converted to nitrate (the nitrate level is going up ) then you have some level of cycle established.
Make sure the ammonia and nitrite are zero, then it's safe to add some fish.
Moving an established filter into a tank should actually give you a working cycle right away and make the tank safe for at least a small number of fish from day 1.
