question about columbian black tailed deer and kodiak bear?
ok the kodiak bear is a subspecies, and everyone loves the kodiak bear, the "columbian black tailed deer" is also a subspecies, why don't people care about the "columbian black tailed deer?
Most of the world does not realize that taxonomy has under gone some serious revisions. The genetic work done figuring out the genomes has become a major factor. There are two species of North American deer, Mule Deer, Odocoileus hemionus and the White-tailed Deer, Odocoileus virginianus. Subspecies are no longer recognized.

There are 4 species of bear.
Ursus americanus Pallas, 1780 -- American Black Bear, black bear, Oso negro, ours noir
Ursus arctos Linnaeus, 1758 -- Brown Bear, Grizzly Bear, Oso pardo
Species Ursus maritimus Phipps, 1774 -- ours blanc, Polar Bear
Species Ursus thibetanus G.[Baron] Cuvier, 1823 -- Asian Black Bear, Asiatic black bear

As with the deer, there are no subspecies any longer. Of course some people will insist there are, but the genes don't lie. The category subspecies is pretty much nonexistent.
There have been many more changes. Used to be 24 subspecies of wolf. They were down to six the last time I read anything about wolf taxonomy. I suspect this will change also.

There are no grey wolves (Canis lupus) in Florida, but there are red wolves (Canis rufus). This species is only found in the south-eastern United States. A large red wolf can easily be mistaken for a small grey wolf – the two are very similar in appearance and both can vary in colour. If your animal was too big to be a coyote, and definitely wasn't a domestic dog, I'd bet on a red wolf. You're very lucky to see one, they are an endangered species and, like all wolves, very fearful of humans.
