what made the germans superior when war broke out?
For several years Germany had been adopting a war economy - developing its army, navy and airforce. For example the Condor Legion fought in the Spanish Civil war, and the Hitler Youth had trained Germany's young with basic military skills, and the invasion of the rest of Czechoslovakia after acquiring the Sudetenland had given the German military some experience.
Furthermore the Germans had developed the Blitzkrieg tactic, which although flawed was an innovation and made good combined use of air as well as ground forces.
Also they were successful in that they initially divided and conquered - taking on Poland and crushing their efforts at defence. The Poles were no match for German superior numbers and better organisation, and then the Germans launched the blitzkreig on the Low Countries and France in an attempt to quickly knock them out of the war.
So better weaponry, better organisation, a larger army, new tactics and speed.
