Carmen was a poetically allusional name in Nabokov's Lolita. In this book, he often called his young lover "Carmen", a surprisingly appropriate allusion considering that the book refers to a hotel called "The Enchanted Hunters," a foreshadowing that he would be "Hunting Carmen" near the end. Here is an excerpt of its subtly misleading poem:

O my Carmen, My little Carmen!
Something, something, those something nights,
And the stars, and the cars, and the bars, and the barmen--
And O my charmin', our dreadful fights.
And the something town, which we so gaily, arm in
Arm, we went, and our final row,
And the gun I killed you with, O my Carmen,
The gun I am holding now.

Legendary opera singer Geraldine Farrar assays the title role of the gypsy seductress in this silent version of CARMEN, based on the Mirimie novel rather than Bizet`s opera. Carmen is a sultry Spanish gypsy who attempts to seduce Don Jose (Wallace Reid), an honest military guard, so that her band of gypsy smugglers can pass through his stronghold. Carmen is a cruel tease, bewitching the military man as her true love, toreador Escamillo (Pedro de Cordoba), waits for her in the shadows. In Pastia`s (Horace B. Carpenter) local tavern, Carmen dances for Don Jose as well as Escamillo in a fantastic sequence that highlights Farrar`s earthy sensuality and physical connection to the romantic heroine, who became her most beloved operatic role. Carmen and Escamillo escape to Seville, but Don Jose is in hot pursuit of the young lovers, willing to do anything to win his gypsy`s affection. The final scenes of this thrilling romantic tragedy, taking place at a bullfight in Seville, feature Cecil B. DeMille`s trademark use of crowds and splendid visual scenery to evoke a moody atmosphere of high drama and bloodthirsty vengeance.

A Guide to Holidays in Matagorda, Lanzarote

On the south coast of Lanzarote is Matagorda situated on the quieter, more peaceful side of the Puerto Del Carmen. Matagorda is a low-key resort that is connected to its busy neighbour by a scenic promenade. So when those quiet bars just won’t do, Puerto Del Carmen is just a short walk away!

Matagorda has its own commercial centre with a wide range of shops, bars and restaurants to cover all your needs! Matagorda is favoured amongst holiday makers because aside from the lively bars and superb restaurants, most places don’t have those annoying touts outside, although this means you can’t swindle a free drink!

Matagorda is home to a Blue Flag beach which is one of the best sports in Lanzarote to go windsurfing because of the stiff sea breeze. With silken sand, sultry seas, scorching sun and striking scenery, there’s a lot to be said for the Matagorda beach! If too much sun-bed rest begins to grate then Timanfaya National Park is nearby with its lunar-like volcanic landscape. Lanzarote’s other attractions such as the underground caves are worth a trip too!

Matagorda has some of the loveliest apartments and hotels in all of Lanzarote, the relaxing atmosphere and absence of high rise hotels making them the perfect getaway! A popular place to stay is the Hotel Beatriz Playa Matagorda because of its central location to the main areas of Matagorda. The Beatriz Matagorda has wonderful facilities such as a nightclub, a salon, restaurants and luxurious big pools. Expect quality if you go to Beatriz Matagorda

Another popular place to go is the Las Gaviotas Apartments. Las Gaviotas has a swimming pool to each block of apartments, a walkway directly to the beach which is great for night-time strolls and lush gardens so the scenery is terrific!

If you feel a yearning to go to Lanzarote, then Matagorda should be first on your list! The atmosphere is relaxed and excitement is never too far away!
