Chlamydia Home Testing - Now Easier in Remote Regions

New research being done in Australia is offering hope that STI home screening may soon be possible in large or remote regions. Scientists from the University of Queensland have developed a method that transforms urine from a liquid to a gel, allowing it to be transported long distances with less risk of spillage.

The method works in a similar way to how nappies prevent leakage. Once the crystals have been mixed up, they suck the moisture out of the urine, which turns it into a “dry, granular gel”.
Made of a similar compound to that found in nappies and the packaging in meat trays, the gel contains an extremely absorbent polymer that makes the liquid-to-gel process happen.

In the UK, home testing has proved an extremely popular method of getting a sexual health screen. Tests for common STIs such as Chlamydia and gonorrhoea can be done through a urine sample, so clinics simply post a sample kit to the address of the patient’s choice, the patient then posts the sample to the laboratory and a few days later, checks their results on the internet or via a text message. It’s simple, convenient and above all it’s discreet. This discretion and relative anonymity is largely what has made home testing so popular in the UK; many people still feel an immense stigma is attached to a routine test for very common infections.

While Chlamydia home testing has been common for a few years in the UK, it has proved more difficult to promote in countries like Australia and the U.S, where the population is spread over a large area geographically. In the UK, patients can send a sample in the post and wherever they are it will usually get there the next day; in the U.S it’s a very different story. While researchers at John Hopkins University in Baltimore have been trialing a home testing scheme in the Baltimore area it has proved difficult to offer the same services to people living in different states. In Australia, with many people living in small, hard-to-reach communities, accessible sexual health testing is crucial but the difficulties posed by getting the sample to the lab intact through rocky terrain have made home testing fairly difficult.

Chlamydia, the most frequently diagnosed STI in America and the UK, is extremely easily treated. A short course of antibiotics can clear it up, but left untreated it is believed to cause serious damage to fertility in the long term. Both Chlamydia and gonorrhoea can lead to pelvic inflammatory disease, which in 10% of women causes miscarriages, ectopic pregnancies and blocked fallopian tubes.

However, 50% of women and 70% do not display any symptoms with Chlamydia, making early screening for the infection a priority, as often a test is the only way to know whether or not someone is infected. Gonorrhoea has a similar profile, though infection rates have dipped slightly in recent years. Home testing for chlamydia and gonorrhea is seen as one of the best ways to ensure testing happens amongst those most at risk, who are also those least likely to visit their doctor. Therefore advances in home testing offer real hope when it comes to beating the infections.

Writing in the journal Sexually Transmitted Infections, the lead author of the study, Seweryn Bialasiewicz of the University of Queensland’s Clinical Medical Virology Centre, are extremely excited about the possibilities of the gel. Pointing out that people often didn’t get tested either “due to lack of access…or…because of the associated stigma”, he believes that home testing “protects an individual’s privacy (and) ..provides more people (with) an opportunity to get tested.” He added, “After all, the near ubiquitous post box can be found even in the smallest and remotest of towns.”
