Stout Beer

Why is stout beer so expensive here in the USA?
Unlike the majority of people in the U.S., I like stout beers like Guinness and Murphy's. However, I've noticed that the price of these beers is always much higher than your regular ale or lager. Is this due to the fact that stouts are less popular in the states or is it more complicated or time consuming to brew? I'm sure the "imported" stouts probably cost more because they are imported.
Also, any recommendation for delicious stout brand is appreciated.
In the US stouts are considered to be specialty beers for which people are willing to pay extra, whether domestic or imported. All American stouts at present are brewed by micro-breweries or brewpubs.

Periodic BeEr $16.99 We're going to bet that you are currently not drinking beer because you're at work, and unlike ThinkGeek World Domination HQ (which has a Beer Fairy), casual imbibing is frowned upon in your office. There, there. It's going to be okay. You know, we have job openings. Just sayin'. You know what makes us feel better? Learnin' stuff. So let's get to it. Despite what this shirt suggests, your beer should not contain either beryllium or erbium. If it does, you need to seriously consider switching to another brewer. Carlsberg Brewery was the location of Søren Sorensen's work on the pH scale. "Skunked" beer is more properly termed "light-struck." When UV light hits beer, it kicks off a chemical reaction, breaking down the isohumulones and creating 3-methyl-2-butene-1-thiol. It's an organosulfur compound, the same thing a skunk sprays. Good for scaring off predators. Bad for beer. Beryllium and Erbium printed with their atomic properties in white on a beer-colored, 100% cotton t-shirt. Okay. So it may not be the same color as your beer of choice, if you drink, say, pilsner or stout. We aimed for the middle ground to cover most of our beer drinkers. Oh, and please wear responsibly. |

Beer Cocktails (50 Series) $8.54 According to a host of print and online sources, the beer cocktail trend is here to stay. Frank Bruni in The New York Times reports that beer cocktails are the number-one sellers in many top establishments, and that their subtle qualities and intriguing flavors have convinced him to rethink his own former aversion to beer-drinking. Despite the popularity of the trend, Howard and Ashley Stelzer’s Beer Cocktails is the first book devoted to the subject. The Stelzers include among their fifty recipes some classic beer cocktails, such as the Radler from Bavaria, a “warm ale flip” from Colonial America, and the most famous of all, the Black & Tan. The emphasis, however, is on newer concoctions, both their own--they are the creators of the respected blog Beyond the Shadow of a Stout (ShadowOfAStout.com)--and those inspired by cutting-edge bartenders from coast to coast. The four recipe chapters cover pale and American-style beers, Belgian-style ales, stouts and porters, and black and brown ales. |
