Tekken 6 - Original Review
After winning a ranked match in Tekken 6, Namco Bandai's 3D fighter, I immediately received a personal message from the loser. "Online is f****** unplayable," he said. He was right. In our match, the tempo was slower than normal, the timing was off, and the screen occasionally jerked and stuttered. And even though our connection quality bounced between great and above-average, our match was still marred by lag.

My aforementioned experience wasn't a fluke; Tekken 6's netcode will disappoint online players. Online matches persistently run below optimal conditions, even if your opponent lives close to your area. The netcode isn't as bad as, say, The King of Fighters 12, but it's not even close to other recently released fighters (Blazblue and Street Fighter 4).
It's shame that Namco didn't put more resources and development time into optimizing Tekken's online component, because Tekken 6 is an excellent fighting game. The core mechanics sit on a solid foundation, emphasizing movement on the X and Z-axis, close-range fighting, mix-up games involving a high-low-throw system (high and mid attacks must be blocked high; low attacks blocked low; throws are unblockable) and frame traps based on a move's speed and recovery.
A Tekken match played competitively is very different than, say, a Virtua Fighter or Soul Calibur match. Sure, the games are bonded by their 3D relationship, in which sidestepping attacks, evading and anticipating the high-low-throw game, and setting-up frame traps are common, but the Tekken series, especially Tekken 6, stress grandeur over conservatism. In the hands of a seasoned player, Tekken characters move with grace and finesse across the stage, using such advanced techniques as fox stepping and wave dashing to exploit the movement system. Long and flashy combos off the ground and in the air are another Tekken trait. Launchers off a normal hit or counterhit can inflict enormous damage, especially when you're in the new Rage system, which boosts your strength when your health is low.
Rage, while a good concept, is sometimes too powerful. Because of the dramatic strength increase, even a small opportunity can result in a comeback. If executed correctly, using timed attacks and the new Bound system (certain attacks stick the opponent to the ground in a vulnerable state), a Rage combo can wipe out an opponent's health -- an instant death. As a result, mistakes are much more costly. To some players, the Rage system may seem unfair -- a rubber band mechanic that rewards poor performance. But for others, it should be a dynamic element that adds excitement, tension, and fear. The Rage system is a pain if you're on the receiving end, but it adds an element of excitement to matches. It changes your game plan, your strategy, your engagement. I like the idea, but if Namco Bandai carries over the Rage system into the next Tekken, then they must address these concerns by toning down the strength through damage scaling.
Since Tekken 3, Namco Bandai planted a tradition of incorporating irrelevant themes to their console ports. In Tekken 3, the minigame Tekken Force placed you not in a versus match, but in a beat-em-up like Final Fight or Streets of Rage. In Tekken 6, Namco continues the Tekken Force tradition with a campaign mode starring Lars and Alisa, two new characters added to Tekken 6 roster. The campaign is meant to extend the game's life beyond the versus matches -- but it's a hollow attempt at entertainment. The controls are difficult to decipher and feel awkwardly clunky, especially when large mobs surround you. Stage layout recycles the same themes and designs, and the pacing follows the same formula: run, beat people up, boss appears at the end. But there's one redeeming quality: the character endings. You can only view character endings after beating Azazel, Tekken 6's last boss, in the Arena. The endings are often funny, well-produced, and expertly choreographed (Ganyru, Heihachi, and Bob's ending are spectacular examples.) But unlocking the characters in order to play them in arena is draconian at best and frustrating at worst. The roster is scatted across the campaign, making multiple playthroughs compulsory -- and torturous.
Beyond the mundane campaign mode, Tekken 6 is missing a few little details. The practice mode is adequate, though it strangely omits a record function for the computer dummy. The visuals aren't as striking and impressive as the arcade release; turning off the default motion blur helps a bit, but arcade purists will still be disappointed. And making additional custom characters for a second player is still impossible -- character customization is bound to a single profile.

Rather than spending resources on an updated Tekken Force, Namco Bandai should have spent more time on Tekken's online matchmaking. Currently, online is too inconsistent to be taken seriously. Without the quality online play, the Tekken community will have to take their battles offline, limiting the potential for community growth. And the small details Namco Bandai neglected hurts the overall experience. Tekken 6 is excellent, but with better netcode, it would have been outstanding.
