How to adjust a fish finder to work at higher RPMs?
I have a Lowerance fish finder and have the transducer mounted to the transum as far from the engine as possible. It works great at slow slow speeds about 3-5mph, but wehn I speed up there is no sonar info coming back. Its almost a blank screen. I thought it was just because of the speed, but when I put it in netrual and rev the engine up it does exactly the same thing. Its a vibration issue not a water issue.
How can I fix this? I've tried chaning the angle of the transducer, but that didn't help. I'm goig to try to slide it down so it sits below the boat more. Is there anytype of damping I can do?
I have a 25' cabin cruser with a 300HP Merc.
Bubbles are usually the problem, ut like I siad it happens while I'm not moving and I just rev the engine while in netrual.
This is an easy one. With some work, you'll get your return. Realize now that there are several things affecting your picture.
First off, the faster you go, the less clarity you'll have in your return anyhow- if you try to adjust the gain to clear up the picture at speed, you'll just end up reading nothing at all. In a little planing boat with a transom mount, your wake will 100% mess with the picture- the more wake the worse it gets. Ways to fix this- change the transducer to a through-hull or hull-mounted unit, if a clear accurate return is really necessary. This also will reduce vibration, as the xducer is bolted down. Mounting the xducer will help too- air bubbles, even microscopic ones found in very gentle prop wash, will affect your return to some extent. The trick is to have the transducer in water that is minimally disturbed, with minimal bubbles under the transducer. Mounting the transducer midships or on the deepest horizontal strake near the keel is the best. If you end up using a mounting block, shape it- don't put a brick around the transducer- it'll cause vortices that will make your return 100% unreliable.
So, once you've got the vibration issue addressed, you're going to have water issues. Accept it.
As far as the vibration, you have several options. You can rubber-mount a bolt on transducer using high-quality vulcanized rubber pads. This will reduce vibration, obviously.
You can also slap an extra rubber-gasketed u-bracket on the transducer housing, if you're comfortable drilling into the bottom of your transom. Check for play between the existing transducer bracket and the bushings that hold the transducer in place and isolate it from the bracket. If the bushing is worn out, you'll get stray charges between the bracket and the transducer- this will 100% kill your return image, and is a good place to segue into the next issue- electrical field around the transducer. Get volt/ohmmeter leads into the water around your transom and measure the difference in charge in the water- if you've got a stray charge coming from the outdrive or through the ground, or if the ground bracket is too close to the transducer... well, you'll have to move the transducer.
Changing the angle of the transducer won't do anything except give you a different aspect view of the bottom, and distort your image and ability to sound the bottom accurately.
Good luck! It took me a few years and a LOT of work to become a pro with mine. Of course, my living depended on it.

lowrance x96 sonar fishfinder?
can anyone please tell me if this model of lawrace is a good product? is it easy to install? is it good for fiding baitfish, game fish, structures? does it work well? any information that would tell me wether or not to buy this product, tell me your opinion about this product.
"pros-
The X96 unit works flawlessly. The display allows a great deal of flexibility and can be tailored to any need. The detail of the display is also excellent and far exceeded my expectations. I find the menus and pages easy to use and the manual useful. I ordered mine with the speed sensor option and installation of the paddle wheel was easy.
cons-
1.The electrical connectors on the back of the unit are not very good. They make it difficult to remove/install the unit in-between trips. I don't feel confident that they will last a long time either.
2. By design, using two tiny "toothed" washers (don't drop or damage them!!!), installation of the transducer was a nightmare. If you are not mechanically inclined or have poor eyesight, you are in for a real treat.
If these two issues were to be corrected by Lowrance, you would have a 5 star product."
