i want to design electronic signal processing equipment, where and what do i learn?


i've done a bit of research and ive discovered what i'm interested in is electronics design specializing in signal processing, the reason is because i want to design and create new and interesting products for the music industry, particularly guitars, and specifically tube amps among other things.

how much do i really need to learn to make amplifiers out of tubes? i'd also like to design other things like electronics for instruments and effects processors but not my main focus in particular.

my next question is where is a good school to do this? i live in CA, and is it possible to do it online?

To do the most original, theoretically-complex work, you will need at least a Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering. However, much audio design is standardized these days (and thoroughly optimized), so you may be able to do useful design with a degree in Electronics Engineering Technology.

Excelsior College and DeVry offer TAC/ABET-accredited online degrees in Electronics Engineering Technology.
Grantham University offers an asynchronous (at your own pace) online degree in EET, but which is not TAC/ABET-accredited.
