Sign Red White
Why is it that a barber shop has this red, white, & blue stripe as their "logo or sign"?
The origin of the barber pole is associated with the service of bloodletting. During medieval times, barbers also performed surgery on customers. The original pole had a brass basin at the top (representing the vessel in which leeches were kept) and bottom (representing the basin which received the blood). The pole itself represents the staff which the patient held onto during the procedure.
The red and white stripes symbolize the bandages used during the procedure: red for the blood-stained and white for the clean bandages. Originally, these bandages were hung out on the pole to dry after washing. As the bandages blew in the wind, they would twist together to form the spiral pattern similar to the stripes in the modern day barber pole. The barber pole became emblamatic of the barber/surgeon's profession. Later the cloths were replaced by a painted wooden pole of red and white stripes.
After the formation of the United Barber Surgeon's Company in England, a statute required the barber to use a blue and white pole and the surgeon to use a red pole. In France, surgeons used a red pole with a basin attached to identify their offices. Blue often appears on poles in the United States, possibly as an homage to its national colors. Another interpretation of these barber pole colors is that red represents arterial blood, blue is symbolic of venous blood, and white depicts the bandage.
Prior to 1950 there were four manufacturers of barber poles in the United States. In 1950, William Marvy of St. Paul, Minnesota started his barber pole manufacturing business. Mr. Marvy made his 50,000th barber pole in 1967, and by the early part of 1996 over 74,000 poles had been produced. The William Marvy Company is the sole remaining manufacturer of barber poles in North America. In recent years, the sale of barber poles has dropped considerably because very few new barber shops are opening.

Signs of Skin Cancer
Skin cancer often appears on the parts of body, which are never exposed to sun. Less than 10,000 people die from skin cancer in US each year. To place this in proper perspective, people in United States are 10 times more likely to be killed in a hospital due to a medical error or twice as likely to be shot to death by a gun. People are now spending billions on the so-called sun-blockers, trying to save themselves from something, which does not threaten them at all: out of 300 sun-baders, 299 never get skin cancer.
There are several different kinds of skin cancer. The one that forms in the cells that make pigment is called melanoma. Skin cancer that forms in the small, round cells in the base of the outer layer of skin is called basal cell carcinoma. The type that forms in the flat cells that form the surface of the skin is called squamous cell carcinoma. Skin cancer that forms in the cells that release hormones in response to signals from the nervous system is called neuroendocrine carcinoma of the skin.
As a cancer patient, it is important that you alert your physician at the first signs of infection and to receive antibiotic therapy. What To Do Right Now To Stop Age Spots Because age spots, poikiloderma and actinic keratoses can serve as warning signs for skin cancer, the American Academy of Dermatology recommends scheduling a professional skin examination each year. When lung cancer spreads to other parts of the body, organs and bones, referred to as "metastasizing".
Skin cancer is a form of cancer that manifests itself in different ways and signs. The most common of skin cancer signs is a change in the skin like growths or sores that don't heal. If you find lumps that are smooth, shiny or waxy looking, or is red or reddish brown in color, it is better to visit the doctor to find out if you are suffering from skin cancer as early as possible.
The signs of skin cancer can be described by a popular alphabetical mnemonic, or memory trick. Commonly known as the ABCs of skin cancer, each letter indicates a certain characteristic of those skin sores, or lesions, which may be cancerous. For example, "A" refers to asymmetry, because cancerous skin lesions are often irregularly shaped.
The second sign of a cancerous lesion, designated as "B," is a reminder that skin cancers, unlike normal moles or other skin tumors, often lack clearly defined borders. "C" stands for color, because cancer sores are often red, blue, white, or black in appearance, and look very different from benign skin growths. There are five primary characteristics of skin cancer. These signs can be easily memorized; they correspond with the first five letters of the alphabet. They are often referred to as the ABCs, or ABCDEs, of skin cancer.
The first sign is designated 'A' for asymmetry. Most malignant skin growths have an irregular shape. The second sign, 'B', reminds readers that cancerous tumors often do not have regular, easily distinguishable borders. Color is denoted by 'C', reminding people that cancerous growths are frequently multicolored in appearance, and may be black, white, brown, red, or blue.
