Sign Light Lamp
fluorescent lamp mystery?
I have an exterior commercial lighted sign with 5 6ft. tubes. It's pretty old and has been in the rain for a while. Now when I put the tubes in they would not work, but I can feel vibrations in the tubes. By mistake I touched one electrode of the tube (while the other end was in its slot) to the metallic frame (cabinet) and the tube worked. How come?
Can someone give me an idea of what is that?
Is the ballast gone? If it is, why is the tube working when i touch the frame?
Thanks.
PS: I can tell you that there is power coming to the slots since I kind of got shocked today...

The reason why the lamp worked is you became the ground. . Not the safest place to put yourself. Since it is an exterior light fixture, you will be shelling out a lot of money for a high-output ballast. Totaling at least 30 feet bulb length.
Make SURE that the fixture is grounded.
