I want to paint my own shop signs; what materials and paint should I use?
The fonts are very specific so I don't want to use vinyl letters. I need practical advice - the design and the painting aren't a problem, I've done this before but not for an outside sign.
There's no reason why you can't get a professional finish on the outside of a shop if you've done this type of lettering before.
You have to make sure the surface you are going to paint is clean so wear gloves and wipe with white spirit. Normally to help paint stick you would sand but to save damaging the surrounding background surface as this will still be visible use a liquid sand (from International paints at DIY stores) and apply to the outline of your letters. Apply first coat of undercoat and second coat of gloss - make sure the paint is alkyd (oil paint) because it wears better outside and leave sufficient drying time between coats - 24 hours.
