Forty years ago, going to sports games was something that most Americans could afford. A Sunday afternoon at the football stadium didn’t make much of a dent in the pocket. Unfortunately, times have changed. Today the cheapest tickets to an NFL football game cost around $50, while the most expensive tickets can cost around $700. A Budweiser beer can be as much as $10 and a simple hotdog isn’t cheap either. In a suffering economy, it has become more and more difficult for fervent NFL fans to see their favorite teams play live.
NFL games usually seem to be a big treat that people save up for, or a pastime for the wealthy. The raw, blue-collar rowdiness of sports games seems to be dying. For older generations who were around when a football game was an economical value, when the players often had off-season jobs in order to make ends meet, it has been hard to see their sport become so expensive.
But, there is one thing that has made this realization just a little bit easier, and that is high definition TV. Now people can gather their friends together, drink cheap beer, eat cheep or home-cooked food, and root for their favorite team in the comfort of their own home on a big screen HD television. As the majority of the most exciting NFL games occur in the winter months, being able to sit inside on a big comfy couch in your sweatpants isn’t all so bad.

Everyone can see the game perfectly, whereas before, most of the time, we found ourselves contorted in strange positions, tangled on the carpet trying to get a glance of the game, while at the same time, making sure the rest of the family could see. Now watching the pleasure on my diehard family members faces as they sink deeper into the couch is priceless. As a family that has never been able to afford going to football games, the aesthetic reality of HD flat screen TVs, and the accessibility of the NFL Sunday Ticket have made those cold fall and winter Sundays some of the best days of the entire year.
