Evolutionary Robotics is a methodology that uses evolutionary computation to develop controllers for autonomous robots. Algorithms in ER frequently operate on populations of candidate controllers, initially selected from some distribution. This population is then repeatedly modified according to a fitness function. In the case of genetic algorithms, a common method in evolutionary computation, the population of candidate controllers is repeatedly grown according to crossover, mutation and other GA operators and then culled according to the fitness function. It is theoretically possible to use any set of symbolic formulations of a control laws as the space of possible candidate controllers. I am sure that many of you might not know so much. In simple words, a robot is a virtual or mechanical artificial agent. The word robot refers to both virtual software agents and physical robots as well.
However, today the robots are not limited to specific applications and are used in many different tasks. Robots are extensively used in the agriculture, medical, industrial and other fields; they are also being used at homes as caregivers for the elderly and the handicapped. Some classes of robots are mentioned below:
Telerobots Telerobots are used in places dangerous to human beings or far away. A human operator located at a distance from a telerobot controls its action, which was accomplished with the arm of the space shuttle. Telerobots are also useful in nuclear power plants where they and can handle dangerous material or undertake operations potentially harmful for humans.
Robots in Space Robots are also being used for scientific or space explorations. Today, two important devices exist which are proven space robots. One is the Remotely Operated Vehicle (ROV) and the other is the Remote Manipulator System (RMS). One of the best known ROV's is the Sojourner rover that was deployed by the Mars Pathfinder spacecraft. Several NASA centers are involved in developing planetary explorers and space-based robots.
Robots Used in Agriculture The idea of using robots in agriculture may sound new to you but in reality robots have been used in agriculture for quite some time now. There are several robots being used for agricultural purposes: such as robots that can pick apples, prune grapevines, and transplant seedlings.
