Call Center Vs Retail Store?
I'm a college student and I need some advice from anyone that works in a call center or a retail sales store. I applied with AT&T for a position as a customer service rep in a call center. The pay rate is between $9.49 - $13.07, for retail sales rep $8.67 - $11.15. I have heard so many negative things about working in a call center. Do you think it would be better to work in a call center or in a retail sales store as a customer service rep?
I did both when I was a college student. Your “better” depends on what matters to you. In my case, the call center was better because I could depend on the income more and get the flexible hours I needed while in school.
Your two companies may be different, but here are the differences I found:
-Retail stores are likely to offer you very limited hours if you need accommodation for a class schedule. Call centers (if they’re open 24/7) will work with you so that you can go to school, but still work as many hours as you want. In my case, I was getting offered 10-15 hours/week in retail, vs. 25 (if part time) or 40 (if full) in a call center.
-Retail stores pay less than call centers.
-You’ll deal with many complaints that are out of your control (wait times, prices, company policies) in either case, but I’ve found customers are nastier on the phone than in person. I think the lack of face-to-face communication allows them to dehumanize you. You need a thick skin for either one, but a call center is more emotionally demanding.
- In a call center, you may have to work on Christmas, Thanksgiving, etc.
- Retail stores can tell you to go home if they’re not busy during your shift or to not come in if they don’t need you (It’s not a question of “Do you want to leave/have a day off?” It’s a command of “We don’t need you, get out of here/don’t come in.). At least in my call center, if you were scheduled to work, you got to come to work not matter the need for you, although sometimes you could *choose* to leave if it was super slow.

So for a retail store that sells a product for £11, generally what would they pay for it? Given that the wholesaler would pay for the transport costs.
I understand that the markup would differ somewhat based on the location of the store. But in a general sense
Also, what it make a difference if the wholesaler isn't registered for Vat.
The mark up would be between 75% and a 100%. This is a normal mark up for most goods in any store.
