The Happy Sad Aam Aadmi

The budget is out and this time the Finance Minister has been liberal to the people by tweaking tax brackets. However, coins have two sides and in this case, the prices of quite a few consumer durables and products have gone up.

This again is going to affect us, the consumers in an indirect way. We pay for these products, and everything from cars to groceries and airfares seem to have jumped up a few notches, affecting a majority of the consumer base. The rates of deodorants and perfumes have been slashed by 5% (welcome change??). Also the rates of cell phones would drop considerably interesting more consumers to opt for high end mobile phones, more mobile connections and value added services. This is the good part so far but, the worst is yet to come.

So, now the general public can take home a larger part of their salary home and dump it into procuring consumer durables from where it goes back into the economy eventually.

Automobiles will cost more by up to a maximum of Rs 26000/-, reason being increase in excise by 2-10%. Ironically the automobile sector is presently experiencing shortage of raw materials and a considerable increase in the raw material costs. Adding fuel to the fire is the case of vehicle call backs due to faulty fuel pump gaskets and problematic front doors (which apparently does not seem to affect India, however). With competition and price discounts aimed at acquiring larger number of customers, it seems that the quality of production which had earlier taken a back seat is now sitting in the boot of the respective vehicles. So is the safety which is another major constraint.

In today's economic situation, not only in India but throughout the world, it is essential to double check a product particularly when it is being offered at a discount. There were rumors that the nearly 100 police cars given free to the Tamil Nadu police all contained some glitches which were however not life threatening. It would be an interesting development to wait and see the newer and cheaper automobiles that would be launched in the near future, which are also expected to be safe.

Fuel prices have gone up post budget and it is probable that at this rate gold would be swapped for a litre of petrol in the near future. Government is however making plans to provide fuel for those below the poverty line by provision of free fuel coupons, similar to the public distribution system. Consumer protection initiative I would say... But how many consumers from below the poverty line actually respect the steps that the government takes to provide them facilities?? The reason is not entirely themselves but people who take advantage of their ability to acquire certain goods at reduced prices or even free of costs in some cases. I would like to mention two cases of such happenings.

A servant maid at a house buys kerosene from the public distribution system and sells it to her employer who uses it to clean the exhaust fans at her home. What went wrong where? First, the government provided her kerosene at reduced prices for the purpose of fuel. Secondly her employer makes use of her situation to obtain kerosene at a rate higher than what she spent but lower than what she actually had to pay.

An election official goes to an apartment in search of a particular Mr. Y to collect details about him and his family members. The apartment is one provided to Mr.Y free of cost as a part of the slum clearance board's plans to accommodate people below poverty line. At the door he is received by a north Indian lady who says that her husband is the alleged Mr.Y In all neither the house nor the people show any signs of being below the poverty line. It was later discovered that Mr.Y had rented his apartment and had gone back to living in the slum using the money from rent to support him.

There is a limit to what that can be done by the government to protect the interest of people and to provide them with satisfactory facilities, after that it becomes the responsibility of the common man or the aam aadmi to protect himself.

Common household products, consumer durables, LCD TVs, air conditioners electronics, gold and toiletries  have all hiked their prices due to increase in excise rates. So have air fares liquor and cigarettes.

Privatization of airlines has already led to cost cutting and cut throat competition in the airline sector. With the amount of competition, the airlines started providing cheaper and cheaper air fares with considerable reduction in service provided. Now considering the hike in duties and the continuing competition, I don't think it would be long before airlines considered having molded plastic chairs nailed to the floor of the planes.
