Pole Sign
Only gestational & yolk sacs... no sign of fetal pole or heartbeat. Normal?
I'm 5 weeks 4 days pregnant. I went in to my OB today to get a vaginal ultrasound.
There was the gestational sac and yolk sac.... looked like one big bubble. But there was nothing to be seen inside it. Is this normal?
I'm very concerned because my doctor was saying it could be a possible miscarriage, or a tubal pregnancy - but that the tubal pregnancy isn't all that likely.
Please help! I am very, very worried! =
It is not a tubal if they saw the gestational and yolk sac in the uterus. So don't worry about that.
I had my 1st u/s at 5w2d, and that was all I could see, too. The fetal pole is just so tiny right now. Older equipment, or even a slight tilt to your uterus can affect how clear the image is. If they didn't say that there were abnomalities with with the yolk sac, then it is a great sign that things are progressing properly. Have they been testing your hCG levels? As long as those are doubling every 48-72 hours, then all is well. The heartbeat cannot be seen on the u/s until into the 6th week.
No need to worry about a miscarriage if you are having no signs. I know it is easier to say than do (trust me), but if you are not having bleeding AND cramping, then you are fine for now. Plus, not everyone is going to go exactly by the textbook. There is so much about pregnancy that is still not understood.
I think sometimes Drs go out of their way to make sure you don't get your hopes up if there is any sign of anything wrong in the the early days of things. I was told that I was miscarrying at 7 weeks. but I am still carrying a healthy son. They just cannot prove that everything is OK, so they expect the worst.
Your Dr will probably order another u/s in about 2 weeks. At that point, you should be able to see your little one, a beating heart and tiny little limb buds.

Magnetic Pole Reversal
So, what's a magnetic reversal? I know about the North and South Poles. Scientists have been observing changes in the direction of earth's magnetic field which took place recently as well as in the distant past. NASA’s website features a map showing the gradual northward migration of the north magnetic pole in the past century and a half. This is not science fiction but science fact!
There doesn't seem to be any pattern that scientists can uncover that will help us predict when the next pole reversal will happen. The range- 5,000 to 50,000 years between reversals. Like, don't hold your breath!
The strength of this magnetic field in the time of dinosaurs was an estimated 2.5 gauss, or about eighty percent stronger than it is now. The weakening of earth’s magnetism is one of the factors believed to be predictive of a pole reversal. That magnetic field reversals have occurred in the past is confirmed in the geological record. What is unclear is how precisely the transition occurs, and what happens to life forms extant at the time of this pole flip.
While all of this sounds too far out there consider our life source, the SUN!
The sun reverses its magnetic field like clockwork every eleven years at the peak of the sunspot cycle. The next solar flip is due in 2012. South-pointing magnetic flux moves from sunspots, which are intense magnetic loops near the equator of the sun, along “meridional flows” to the north magnetic pole, and vice versa. As the oppositely-directed charge accumulates at the poles the field declines, until eventually the reverse charge predominates
Magnetic reversals have already happened 171 times in the last 76 million years, but who's counting? Getting closer to home, 14 of them have happened in the last 4.5 million years. Scientists are agreed on a lowering of the strength of the magnetic field is a sign of greater pole reversal.
Around the birth of Jesus, magnetic intensity was the greatest. Today, the intensity is 38% lower. Also, measurements taken from around 1900 show a seven percent drop in intensity.
All of that aside, what we don't know is what effects such an event would have on life. We can guess, but maybe we should ALL work together to increase our awareness and consciousness instead.
