Pirates Light
Are the ships being pirated allowed to be armed? Can somebody shed some light on int'l maritime arms law?
Of all the Pirate stories from off the coast of Somalia, I have yet to hear of a vessel fighting back with gunfire. Is this because they're not allowed to be armed?

U.S. Navy has created a force devoted to fighting these Buccaneers.
2 reasons at least that they aren't armed.
1. it's a rare occurence. Most ships in thier 50 year lifetime will never be attacked. So the cost benefit analysis shows that a group of 4 to 6 paid fighters will cost a couple hundred thousand a year for 50 years, that's a couple million dollars and they'll probably never even do anything or see a pirate.
2. arming the standard crew, give them a gun you have to give them hazard pay. Also, most hijackings have been low key, they take the safe and ransom the captain. they can get 50- 60k for a captain, even from his wife if the company doesn't want to pay, less than 1 year salary for the captain, he'll pay it himself to save his own life. Even if the company pays, they're only paying 100K every now and again rather than constantly pay security gaurds. Further still if the crew had guns, these deck hands would likely lose to seasoned fighters who've been in the line of fire before. Now you have death suits from family memebers of crew as well as dead people on your hands.
Even banks on land have policy to give the money and get the robbers out the door. They don't want a hostage situation, they don't want customers dying in the bank (lawsuit). It is much more cost effective for them to give you the 2,000$ in the drawer and get you out of here.
