Why are ships so vulnerable to pirate attacks?
The whole pirate thing just seems way too unnecessary. Why aren't ships outfitted with some sort of defense, since there's clearly a problem?
Maybe have the crew members go through some weapons training? One or two mounted .50 cals to blow skiffs away at long range?
Why are all of them so helpless, and what's preventing them from doing something about it? I mean, the pirates are just illiterate goons with ancient AK-47s running around on bloody rafts.
Surely the cost of some light shooting training for the crew and some weapons for them would seem like a better idea than paying millions in ransom money, possibly losing your ship, cargo and losing your client?
Most freighters have very small crews, maybe a couple dozen people. Big ships are all blind spots and a lot of real estate to patrol. Boarding a ship underway is remarkably easy.
Some ships like oil tankers can't carry weapons. The potential for fire or explosion is too great.
The owners of the ships don't want to arm the crews fearing mutinies and liabilities. In fact carrying armed guards on a ship raises insurance costs rather than lowering them.
Most countries make it illegal for a ship to carry weapons into port. The crews would risk going to jail.
All that said, your point is valid, this is a ridiculous state of affairs. At a minimum the governments of people taken hostage should hit back with retaliatory strikes.

The Pirates of The Florida Keys
The route of the square-rigged,usually overloaded,treasure laden ships of Spain would make cuba their first stop. The shallow waters and pirate infested islands of the Florida keys made the voyage treacherous,as they sailed from cuba in route to Spain.
Wreakers and pirates made the keys their home,and for good reason,the navigational charts the Spanish used had no markings of the reef and shoals that surround the keys.Squals and hurricanes pushed the ill handling ships onto the reefs ,and they were easy prey for wreckers and pirates.
The wreckers were mere opportunist,who kept a lookout for ships wandering , or that were storm-tossed into shallows or onto reef heads.Wreckers were know to put lights up and cause shipwrecks, this was just the first forms of piracy.
The pirates would hide their shallow draft boats among the many islands,and ambush any ship caught on the reef.Pirates would attack the wreckers driveing them from the treasure ships,and seize the bounties.After all treasure was removed from the ship,it would be set on fire,leaveing nothing that would warn other ships of the dangers below the surface.
Spanish explorers discovered human bones on the island of Key West and named the place Cayo Hueso (bone Island),settlers misspoke the Hueso for wesso and the island was known as Cay West and later became Key West.
Once Spain traded Florida back to the United States,the United States Navy was sent in to hunt, and hang all pirates in the area.Once order was restored a Navy Base was set-up in Key West,and during the Cival War most ships captured in the area were sent there.
By 1820 Lighthouses were placed at Sand Key,The Dry Tortugas,Cape Florida and by 1852 Carysfort Reef Light was placed.There is actually Lighthouses still around today,of course they have been modernized,Sombrero Reef was lit in 1858,Alligator Reef was lit in 1873,American Shoal in 1880.
Once steam powered ships were invented,shipwrecks were no longer a problem,they could steer away from problem areas, and charts were marked with reef lines and shoals.
This put an end to the mystique of The Pirates of the Florida Keys.
