can the cops impound a vehicle if it has a temp. permit on it ?

ok my husbands 1982 truck, the tags where expired, but we bought a permit for it because the fees are paid, and the police had it towed for expired registration. when we looked at the vehicle codes and found out they shouldn't have towed it. they said those do not matter they where just enforcing the city codes. but how can the police over ride the DMV. we also found out that they can not take it with out giving a warning, or a ticket we recieved nothing AND the towing company unhooked his back up beepers in the middle of the day to get the truck that is the only way for him to get it was to back up with the way it was parked. please help if you have any suggestions.

Would a grocery store actually tow a car away?

Rather than pay like $5 for an hour of parking time I park in a grocery store which is about a 10 minute walk. There are signs listed in the lot that say it is defiant trespassing to park there and go somewhere else. They even list the name and phone number of a towing company saying it is always enforced. This parking lot is never more than 20% full. I have parked here a couple of times throughout the years for a time I had to meet for something in town. I never was more than about 90 minutes parked there.

Is it likely that I could be towed? I figure if a car is there a real long time they could tow it but not the short amount of time I am there. Is there a chance this store tows some cars away and for the little bit of time I park there should I be worried about getting towed?

Well when you are talking about grocery stores, they can institute rules and regulations as it relates to their parking lot. The owners of the store own not only the store but they have a right to enforce rules as it regards their parking lot. They own that area, so yes they can tow vehicles away. However they can only tow vehicles away if they suspect that the owners of the vehicles are parking on the store lot and going elsewhere for "convenience" sake. The store does this to protect their business from free loaders. If you are not going in the store for a reason, then the owner of the grocery store has the right to tow your vehicle away since it is their property.
