How Would You Spend 24 Hours In Rome?
Discovering the subtle nuances that make up a city can add up to be the highlight of a weekend break; the sights, the aromas, the people and the chance encounters, these are what good travelling memories are made of. You don’t have to sightsee your socks off to experience these, and nor do you have to rush to cram everything in; the dawn of the 24-hour city tour is upon us and is more convenient than ever. Whether you’re on a strict itinerary, you managed to grab cheap last minute flights or you're even stopping over on route elsewhere, 24-hours is more than enough time to soak up the highlights and good times of Italy’s capital, Rome.
The secret to satisfying travelling is keeping your eyes open, your mind clear and to be prepared for the unexpected, as opportunities can always pop up. Like most ancient cities, Rome is best travelled on foot, where the stunning architecture is at eye-level, the sun is usually shining and thankfully you’re not at the mercy of the fairly lackadaisical public transport. Grab a map or just follow your nose, as there’s plenty to see and do here in a mere 24 hours.
Start with a breakfast to remember at the palatial Hotel Majestic. This former palazzo on Via Veneto is as grand as its name suggests and offers great people watching opportunities as it overlooks the busy street below. From here, head to one of the city’s favourite museums, the Galleria Borghese. Though Rome is famed as being a museum in itself, this 17th century villa is a short and quick lesson in Italian art and design; from Renaissance paintings and sculptures to baroque antiques. If you enjoy the work here of Caravaggio, then you must head to San Luigi dei Francesi; a church famous for the ten paintings he created to adorn the Contarelli Chapel in 1599.
Built by the Emperor Hadrian, the Pantheon is as tall as it is wide and dominates the Piazza della Rotunda. Grab a coffee at one of the open air cafes and take in the 18th century obelisk in front of the Pantheon, and also the intricately carved fountain. Afterwards, head towards Piazza di Spagna to window-shop, or splurge, in the famous Via Condotti. This cluster of classic Italian boutiques and designers is an experience in itself, though, for a little more value for money, head over the other side of the city centre to Via del Governo Vecchio.
Between zig-zagging from piazza to piazza and following any side street that takes your fancy, you will undoubtedly discover many more hidden delights on your way. The flower market at Campo dei Fiori and the Ponte Sisto offer another side of the city and, when hunger strikes, grab a stand-up pizza at a popular pizzeria al taglio, before catching some evening drinks and jazz at 3 Vicolo del Fico. With many hotels in Rome to choose from and seasonally great weather, there’s never a bad time to visit Italy’s capital.
