Neon Sign Construction
Ion Blower Construction?
I have an idea for building a simple ion "engine", ,but cannot find any plans or instructions online. I plan to cut short lengths of copper pipe and wire them alternately positive and negative, mounted on an insulated board. it will look something like this:
air in ------> (+) (-) (+) (-) (+) (-) -------> air out
The parentheses represent 1" lengths of copper pipe, and the charge is listed. I should obviously space the pipe far enough apart that little current seeps between them, but will my idea work? Can I simply wire the terminals of the transformer to the pipe, or do I need something extra?
Lastly, I am looking at a 9kV and 6kV neon sign transformer on ebay. They are the same price, but the 6kV is nicer, and is already wired. Which do you suggest?
Ach! I just realized, will I need to convert the output of the tranny to DC?
You will need to use AC on your copper pipe. Here's why:
First of all, you must ionize the air, because non-ionized air is not attracted to positive or negative charge. So, lets say you first ran the air through a high voltage screen to ionize it negatively. Then your first positively charged pipe would draw the air in, but when it got to the negatively charged pipe (like in your diagram), that one would push it back, so no motion. An easier way to do this is to use multiple sections of pipes, but turn them positive and negative in a synchronous method. The sequence is the first pipe is positive to draw air in, then turns off while the second pipe turns on positive, then when the air is in the second pipe, the first pipe turns negative and pushes on the ionized air in the second pipe while the third pipe turns on positive and draws the air into it out of the second pipe. All of the pipes need to be arranged to alternate charge synchronously, thereby pushing and pulling the air through the engine. As you cascade this effect, you will accelerate the ionized air. As the speed of the air increases, you can shorten the distance between the pipes on the faster moving air so that you can parallel the charging circuit on them and still maintain the proper push/pull effect.
This method is used in a lot of different devices. Linear accelerators, particle accelerators, and traveling wave tubes are a few I can think of off the top of my head. Oh, and maybe the "worm drive" submarine engine in "The Hunt for Red October".
Be aware that 6kV is deadly, so be careful to use proper safety at all times and keep other people away from it.
