Neon Open Sign One of my neon tetra keeps its mouth open and is breathing rapidly?
What is this a sign of? How should i treat the little guy? Should i treat the whole aquarium? My aquarium is band new, maybe four days old, i conditioned the water and have a new filter.
I thought this might be a sign of bad water so i changed a couple gallons today from the tank

Neons are very sensitive to water quality and should never be the first fish in a new aquarium. They will also die off if there is a big change in the pH of the water from the fish store to the water in your tank even in a mature aged tank. It sounds like it is suffering from pH shock. This is typically fatal to neons.
The only chance it has is if you know what the pH was of the fish store water and the difference between that and your tank water. Then you can sloooowly change it with chemicals so it is closer to what it was living in at the store. pH is very important to new fish. More new fish are killed by pH shock than by almost anything else.
The spikes in ammonia, nitrites and nitrates while a new tank cycles are very detrimental to neons. The people at the fish store have failed you in that they should have explained to you which fish are suitable for cycling a new tank.
Most people use zebra danios or guppies to start up a tank. They are hardy (neons are not) and will usually survive while the tank goes through the nitrogen cycle during its' first 2-3 weeks.
pH shock is caused by just dumping a new fish into the tank without "acclimating" it properly to the water quality in the tank. You should open the bag, roll the top down a little so it floats, open, in the tank, and add a half cup of tank water to the bag every 15 minutes for about an hour and a half. The more sensitive and expensive the fish, the longer you should take to acclimate them. I have spent up to 4 hours acclimating very expensive and hard to find fish when adding them to my tank.
