Cubicle Computer Christmas
No, it’s not a traditional Christmas in our office, but when you look around at the people who I work with, we are all a little “geeky” and we like it that way. We couldn’t imagine a white elephant gift exchange without R2D2 wrapping paper or bacon wrapping paper concealing a coveted touch pad mouse or cordless <a href=http://www.cirque.com/uploads/products/ergonomic_mouse.html>ergonomic mouse</a>. That is just who we are.
Not everyone has a metal “Christmas tree” sculpture decorated with lights and ornaments in their office or reindeers made from vending machine pretzels. A lot of offices don’t even decorate with all the different holidays that people celebrate- no one wants to offend. But in our office it’s a computer Christmas.
Computer Mouse Ornaments and All
Instead of sleighs and colored balls on the Christmas tree, we’ve hung a red and green <a href=http://www.cirque.com/uploads/products/computer_mouse.html >computer mouse</a> from a metal tree someone created out of old coat hangers and cubical parts, then spray painted it gold. A shiny spray-painted gold stapler acts like our Christmas star and a <a href=http://www.cirque.com/uploads/products/touchpad_keyboard.html >touch pad keyboard</a> rests just beneath the tree like a special gift from Santa.
Donating For Another Cause
We don’t have just a food drive and toy drive box, we have a box for recycled computer equipment to donate to a needy school. Someone even filled it with some new software and a couple new touch pad keyboards. It’s a tech-y Christmas for sure, especially when there is an award for the most decorated cubicle. I don’t think I am going to win this year. Actually, I never win- some people really go over the edge with their decorations. The tech support guy we nicknamed Clark Griswold wins every year as the most decorated cubicle for obvious reasons- his cube glows for the month before Christmas and a couple weeks after with neon red and green lights.
Every year we do the traditional holiday party too. We all gather in the main room and watch South Park while sipping eggnog and unwrap bacon wrapping paper snow-globes of Darth Vader or Circuit City gift certificates. We don’t know what kind of sneaky surprise our boss is going to be surprising us with this year as our thank-you company gift. Last year it was an XBOX for the break room and the year before that we all got a remote controlled computer mouse.
Sure if we were a stuffier group of people we might demand a lobster and steak dinner in a nice restaurant for our company party, but we don’t sell retail Rolexes or stocks, we create programs and we come to work in t-shirts and jeans. We like our Futurama and our Robot Chicken marathons- we are computer geeks and we like our computer Christmas.
