light to make neon tetras colours show?
i have a spare tank so want to put lots of neon tetras in there, i love it when you go into an aquatic store and they have a certain light that makes the neon's colours really show/pop. does anyone know what kind of bulb it is? thanks.
Neons will look very bright under a "Gro-Lux" bulb or other special aquarium light with more of the blue and red spectrum. There are several different brand names for these. The light from these bulbs has a pikish tint if you look at them away from an aquarium.
The most important thing about bringing out the colors of neons and other iridescent tetras, though, is to position the lighting so that the fish are lighted from the front, not from behind. Try putting a single-tube light above the back of the tank, and then above the very front of the tank, and you'll see what I mean.
The fish's colors may look sort of washed out if you have them in very light-colored surroundings. Using a dark-colored backgroud (dark blue or black, for example) on the back wall of the tank, and preferably a dark substrate (such as dark brown, black, or dark grey gravel) will encourage them to show more color.
The neons will also be more relaxed, and therefore more colorful, if they have a lot of cover, such as thickets of real or artificial plants, where they can take shelter if danger threatens.
