Rangers v Sevilla – Champions League 2009-2010 Matchday Two
With the bonus of a surprising point from their first match away to VfB Stuttgart safely in the bank Rangers now entertain the group favourites Sevilla on September 29th at Ibrox.
The Spanish side secured a 2-0 home victory over Unirea Urziceni on matchday one and now come to Ibrox confident of an away victory. With players such as strikers Luis Fabiano and Freddi Kanute in the team it will be a tall order for Rangers to keep a clean sheet however with the excellent Majid Bougherra and captain David Weir lining up opposite the strikers Walter Smith’s men must be confident of achieving such a result. Last weekend’s scoreless draw with Aberdeen meant that the Gers had recorded their third scoreless draw in the league in succession and missed the influential midfielder Steven Davis who is also a doubt for tomorrow nights match alongside Bosnian full back Sasa Papac who has a hamstring injury. Rangers will hope to have both back as they seek to push on from their promising draw in Germany in what promises to be an intriguing encounter.
For Rangers to get a positive result tomorrow night, and by that I mean a victory, then they must play at a high enough tempo to ensure that their more skilful opponents are denied the time on the ball that they would like to get therefore this means that Kenny Miller must start up front in preference to Kris Boyd even though the latter poses more of a goal threat. In central midfield a pairing of Kevin Thomson and Pedro Mendes will need to be at their best as they are likely to oppose Didier Zokora, a former Tottenham player, who is what could be best described as combative. On the right of midfield the industry of Steven Davis should be preferred to the attacking possibilities of Nacho Novo and making up the quartet on the left of midfield will be recent signing Jerome Rothen who looks to be the most likely to unlock the Sevilla defence as Europe should suit him more as there will probably be a bit more space for him to operate in.
Sitting in front of the back four in a spoiling role will be Lee McCulloch who performed admirably in the last outing in Germany. With Steven Whittaker appearing at right full back alongside Weir and Bougherra it will be left to see if Papac returns from injury to take up his usual left back slot, however if Papac is not fit then Steven Smith will replace him. With Allan McGregor continuing in goal this would be Ranger strongest eleven and one that it would be hoped that would be able to continue their positive start to this years campaign, however the strength of their opponents should be noted as well as their liking for Glasgow as a city as they won the 2007 UEFA cup at Hampden Park.
