Music and Rhythm: Ubiquity Studio... [LP]

Music and Rhythm: Ubiquity Studio... [LP]

$19.98

Full title: Music and Rhythm: Ubiquity Studio Sessions, Vol. 1.There is no Ping Pong Orchestra, of course -- unless you want to count the impressive array of vintage soul, jazz, and funk LPs on which Shawn Lee drew for this celebration of rare grooves and modern loops. The first installment in the Ubiquity label's Studio Sessions series, Music and Rhythm draws on everything from Indian film soundtracks ("Bollywood") to souled-up Brazilian grooves ("Swamp Samba"), spaghetti Western funk ("Pasta Cowboy"), and hyperactive spy movie chase scene music ("King Conga"). Not everything here fits easily into a single category either, which makes things even more fun: "Brooklyn" is a fairly straightforward piece of trip-hop turntablism, but "Scorpion" is some kind of twisted amalgam of 1970s funk and metal, and "Monterey Jack" brings back the spaghetti Western sonorities and fuses them with lazy funky soul. If you're someone who keeps the six-disc CD player shuffling constantly back and forth between Saint Etienne, Ennio Morricone, James Brown, and Percy Faith, then you'll get a huge kick out of this album. ~ Rick Anderson

Studio Cameroon

Studio Cameroon

$14.99

Although it has her name on it and she's involved in many of the tracks, Studio Cameroon isn't Sally Nyolo's album. Instead, it's the product of her return to Cameroon, where she sought out and recorded new talent. There's a vast range of music here, from the celebratory Afro-pop of "Marche Mokolo" to the near-gospel feel of the voices on "Pek," where Nyolo combines with La Voix Du C?nacle. "Bikoutski" is Nyolo's only solo track, handily evoking that Cameroonian style. Elsewhere she takes a hand in the compositions, but the performances are by the artists themselves, like Mr. Eddy's soulful "Obili Eba." There's an insistence to much of the music here, like Mama Andela's urgent "To Le Bepe." But others lay back to excellent effect, such as Mandeng or D'Embazo Star De Nkometou. With this disc, Nyolo has used her name to help bring a number of very talented artists into the international spotlight. ~ Chris Nickson

While the New York City-based avant-garde composer/saxophonist has created a number of cinematic scores, his artistic vision has often differed from that of the filmmakers, sometimes resulting in abandoned or rejected projects. Regardless of its actual use in finished movies, music that Zorn intended for the silver screen has reliably found its way onto his FILMWORKS series, and this excellent set cherry-picks from those collections. Although the compositions here lack the context of the full soundtracks, they are fascinating in their variety. Styles shift from Jewish klezmer tunes to percussion-based Latin pieces to delicate Eastern-inflected songs, with many of downtown NYC's finest musicians on hand, including guitarist Marc Ribot, drummer Joey Baron, and countless others. While this compilation serves as a best-of disc for Zorn's cinematic work, it also makes an excellent introduction to the renegade artist's own wildly diverse and inventive aesthetic.

Sultry, melancholic, lilting, and gorgeous, the music of Cesaria Evora has the power to seduce completely on first listen. Hailing from Cape Verde, Evora is a master of the morna (a sound indigenous to the islands), but is also adept at various styles that synthesize the music of Europe, Africa, the Caribbean, and Latin America. In addition to skimming the highlights from Evora's studio work, the set also includes previously unreleased bonus tracks, such as her duet with the singer Bonga on Evora's famous "Sodade." Longtime fans will likely have the albums from which these tracks are culled, but for the uninitiated THE VERY BEST will provide an excellent and essential introduction.

Michael Johns - Dream On Studio Version Music Video

What do these music recording studio terms mean??? 10 pts. for best answer?

I want to go into the studio and record a demo, but I'm confused about what the "things" offered mean. What does custom tracks, disc mastering, data transfer and library tracks (loops) mean? Please help, thanks :)

'Custom track' probably means a custom made back beat. Disc mastering probably includes, pre-mastering (this is simply called 'mastering', too - level/ interval adjustment/other FX processing, etc of the mix to prepare for actual mastering) and either burning a master disc or creating a glass master.

'Data transfer' means transferring a session/audio data from a medium to another medium(e.g from a DAT to CD, harddrive to DVD, etc) in the same or different format.

'Library tracks' can mean the drum loops (the beat that is repeated over and over like hip-hop, dance-hall, etc.)
