What military symbols are copyright free?

I understand that the new Air Force and Army logos are copyrighted. What about other military symbols like the AF security police badge or defensor fortis badge - are they copyrighted? I think they are public domain. I spoke to a real bonehead at the AF copyright office and he couldn't answer my question. He referred me to the AF Historical Offices which aren't answering their phone so far today.

Are you trying to sell T-Shirts or something?

I have to assume you are because if you were not intending to profit off the sale of something with the logo on it, it would not matter.

Most Unit crests and military symbols are in the public domain.

Military Clothes – Uncle Sam's Outfitters - On Vintage Military Clothes

If you like purchasing military clothes, you can find Khaki at such stores as the Gap. However, most people who wear military clothes are purchasing them either on-line at stores which specialize in carrying authentic military clothing or at an Army-Navy Store either in their neighborhood or on-line. Uncle Sam's Outfitters at http://www.unclesamsoutfitter.com is that kind of website.

Some military garb is considered ‘Vintage' now, and costs a lot of money. Military uniforms from WWII can go for a lot of money if they're in good condition. It was so common for people to put those in old trunks, oftentimes the wool that was in the uniforms is eaten by moths so they have holes in them, or that ancient smell can't be gotten out of the fabric because it was slightly damp because some flood hit back in 1963, or again in 1974 and thus the clothes are really unusable.

Wearing vintage military clothes is reminiscent of more innocent times. Those who never actually went through the turbulent 50s watch the old movies and think that Elvis used to really pick up chicks in his '53 Chevy and sing with them down on the beach… but he was making movies at the time; so he never really did anything fun like that.

Uncle Sam's Outfitters has a vintage section at http://www.unclesamsoutfitter.com . Just load the main page and do a search for 'Vintage'. Right at this moment they have Vintage field jackets, headwear, shirts, shorts and vests. If you click on 'Vests', it will show Vintage Olive Drab Ranger Vests for between $40 and $45. They can be gotten in sizes up to 3XL.

Keep checking back there to see what else they carry as time goes by. Remember that vintage clothing will come and go.

Military clothes bring back the thought that, even if we don't have it perfect now… there was a time when it was perfect. How army clothes say that, I'm not sure; because wouldn't you think that they'd say another story. But, they really don't say that story. They say, hey – there was a war that we had to go through, but we got through it and we're all still here. There's always hope in old war souvenirs. They say, ‘Hitler tried to take over the world, and we said, "NO, you're not doing that!" ‘.

You won't find anything from World War II there, but you can get Black Vintage Military Fatigue Caps with a Jolly Roger skull-and-crossbones on it for only $13.99.

So, when you purchase vintage clothes, sometimes it's to bring back times long-ago or  to remember things that are now only distant memories; and at other times you wear them just because they're made well and they shade your eyes like no other cap can. After all, they were designed for people to live outdoors all the time. A Brown Vintage Military Fatigue Cap for only $13.99 has a wide brim and is very comfortable. It's embroidered with the Ultra Force Logo.

Nostalgia has a large part in making things up, because the memory really doesn't remember things beyond about 20 years. We only remember memories of memories of memories. And, as time goes on we modify and change those memories in certain ways. If you don't keep up memories, they disappear. So, to get something that used to be what you touched or held when you were a child is to bring back memories that you hadn't thought of in years.

Possibly, we're just making up new memories though to replace all the gaps that are there. Hopefully we make up better memories than they actually had been back then. For, World War II was a scary time period. I was born in 1953, and back then there were fears that the world would be destroyed by the Atom bomb. There were "Duck and Cover" drills, and the air raid siren would sound every Saturday, making all the local dogs start howling. Wearing military clothing can bring back memories of that time period, and not necessarily bad ones.
