Mobile phones are becoming an annoyingly ubiquitous phenomenon. Go to any impoverished locality, and you see families struggling to make ends meet, living in cars, and walking around with cellphones at their ears.
However, having a cellphone means that one has a responsibility to oneself and others. Some basics of cellphone etiquette are as follows:
- Turn it off or switch to silent mode when required Cellphones should not be used in locations where silence is expected, or in aircraft where they can intervene with radio communication. If you are going to watch a movie or a concert, keep your phone in silent mode. On a plane, keep it in flight mode or switch it off.
- Look at people while talking to themThis sounds more like a lesson in manners than in cellphone etiquette, but one of the first side-effects of cellphones is that they make people slaves. Rather than checking for a text message or playing a game while talking to people - look at them. No, it won't hurt you.
- Respond to communication Missed calls and text messages require you to respond to them. While missed calls from unknown numbers may go unanswered, remember that people are calling you because they need something. Attend to them. Sometimes, responding over the Internet may be more feasible, so decide this on a case-by-case basis
- Use appropriate ring volumes In the year 2010, you are really lucky if you live without having heard a loud, sudden burst of sound in the most inappropriate of places. Do not be the culprit of such sounds yourself. If you have hearing difficulties, use the vibrator alert or keep your headset plugged in. In public places or at the workplace, keep your ringtone at low volumes.
