Why I'll Always Love Carrie And The Girls
There are some people who can tell you where they where the day they heard Kennedy had been shot or the day England won the world cup? Me? I remember where I was the day they screened the first ever Sex and the City episode…I think if I try hard enough I might even remember what I was wearing. A lot has happened since that fateful day when, sitting cross legged on the sofa in my parents basement in 1998… I met the women I would come to know as, Carrie, Samantha, and Charlotte and of course Miranda.
From that day forth I knew I would be a fan and in the years that passed I bought the box sets, coffee table books and have even done the Sex and the City tour of New York. …although that's not something I would normally share. More importantly I cut dates short and endured endless mocking from family members and grumpy boyfriends all so I could make sure I was there to watch the latest episode unfold. And I am not alone in my obsession. Women all over the world this week will be polishing their stilettos, shaking their martinis and cooking their cupcakes (that's not a euphemism incidentally) just in time to the second instalment which is out on Friday.
But why has the Sex and the City franchise been so successful when so many others have crashed and burned? After all who remembers Sunset Beach or the Cashmere Mafia or even our own Hearts and Bones (look it up)? All programmes that attempted to appeal to a female audience but lacked the needed punch and weren't re-commissioned. Sex and the City on the other hand, like all good friendships evolved with us going from a programme about Carrie to a drama about four friends all in fabulous outfits. Fashion porn for women and good old fashioned gossip for everyone else. There wasn't an episode where I didn't salivate over Carrie's shoes, share her sadness over Mr Big, wish I was as funny as Miranda, as sweet as Charlotte or able to snog a man as gorgeous as Samantha's Smith Jared. But the programmes' longevity isn't just down to the characters. Sex and the City has also changed the way women talk about sex in many cities.
It pushed the boundaries with its subject matter and it did it all while looking fabulous. It brought to the little screen something that women had been doing for years in private– talking about sex. As a result it is no longer shocking to turn on the TV and to see a woman talking about buying a certain battery powered item or even discussing the latest strange sexual peccadillo. Feminism can takes many forms and there aren't many institutions that can claim to responsible for changing the way we talk about sex…or fashion for that matter. They said in loud voices, we are women, we love shopping and we love sex and we are not embarrassed about it!
So while the critics may moan that the film is too commerical or has not done the characters justice I think they still deserve to have their place in history. If only for the issues that they covered and for the freedom they encouraged. And now as the women grow older they are again breaking new ground. How rare it is to see a film about four fashionable women in their…gasp…forties and as in the case of Kim Cattrall fifties. They are older some of them are married and yet they still manage to be as cutting edge as they ever were be it in the way they shop, view men and ultimately in their friendships. This film is a welcome break from nubile young twenty some things that we are so often bombarded with. So on Friday as you sip your Martini raise a glass and think how boring our own city be without them.
