Where can I go in Chicago for an old-fashioned cinema experience?

I am a new resident of Chicago and was looking for a classic cinema experience. I was a little disheartened though in my research to find out that most of the old moviehouses have been renovated into performing theatres or have deteriorated into 'dives'. Where should I go for an authentic, giant marquee-lit, 30s style Chicago movie experience?

Most of the old style theaters were shut down following the opening of Megaplexes in the area. Which really is a shame. I'm pretty sure we'd all save a lot on gas if we could walk to a nearby cinema rather than having to drive 10-15 minutes away minimum.

There are a few that were restored to their former glory. Historic Theatres is a site that has information about theaters all over the US that have been restored. Click on the "Theatre Links" link on the lower left hand side of the site. There you'll find links to classic cinemas throughout the country.

The Vibrators: Knox, John Ellis (vocals, guitar); Gary Tibbs (bass, background vocals); Eddie (drums).Recorded live at the Roundhouse, London, England on March 26, 1978.That the Vibrators were one of the much less important, second-division acts on the original 1976-1977 English punk scene yet were still this great, and this fun, says all you need to know about how incredible that scene (and that era) was. They may not have been the Pistols, Clash, Buzzcocks, Damned, and so on, but this gang of social deviants had their place, then and now. Despite a few silly, bad-taste lyrics (not such a bad idea then), they lit up the night with infectious dynamism, a crude, get-right-to-it approach, and a pile of trad-based riffs -- something made doubly clear by the no-overdubs, total verve Live at the Marquee. Years later, these live, speed-ridden versions of "London Girls," "Whips and Furs," "I Need a Slave," "Baby, Baby," and other Pure Mania kicks still make you want to get up and pogo around your cramped living room. And even Iggy's Stooges and the Rolling Stones would feel like joining you in your jump-around if they heard what these guys do to "No Fun/Raw Power" and "Jumping Jack Flash." All the set is cut from the same mold, and in this rare case, it doesn't frickin' matter. Rock & roll suss and speed buzz meeting in this instant fit is something no music fan with any grits could ever tire of. Even the shouted song introductions are a wake-up jolt like a big-gulp coffee. ~ Jack Rabid

In And Around Torrevieja

Torrevieja is a typical Spanish town boasting, on average, 320 days of sunshine each year. With its sandy beaches, excellent selection of tapas bars, restaurants and shops as well as a night market selling a selection of gifts, collectibles and leather goods make it a popular place for English people to Holiday.

Torrevieja's surrounding area is famous for its salt production and hosts two large salt lagoons on which, at certain times of the year, Flamingos can been seen in huge flocks. Many visitors stop along the roadside to take in this spectacle and use the opportunity to take photos.

Apart from salt production, fishing and tourism are what keep Torrevieja's a thriving and lively town.

Torrevieja can be found on the South East coast of Spain's sunny Costa Blanca, about 50km South West of Alicante. The main coastal road running along the Costa Blanca (N332) takes you through the town of Torrevieja and allows you to take in the views along the way.

Its name means ‘Old Tower'. There are a number of ancient watch towers situated along the coast and Torrevieja's ‘Tower' became famous in 1802 when it took over the production of salt from neighbouring Orihuela.

For those of you who appreciate good, honest Spanish food, there are a number of traditional taverna's as well as tapas bars for a light lunch or snack. In addition you can find most international cuisine whilst walking the Towns typical Spanish streets, from Italian to Greek or an English fry up for breakfast. There are a number of fine dining eateries, including famous fish and seafood restaurants which make a fantastic place for a romantic evening or merely for those who appreciate fine dining. A walk along Torrevieja's decked, palm tree lined promenade for a coffee or cocktail in one of the many bars along the seafront provide a lovely end to the evening.

The younger generation may wish to find the street leading directly from the main road away from the seafront which hosts a number of Irish bars and clubs which are open into the early hours of the morning and which bustle with groups of friends on a night out.

There is also a street market every Friday morning which is one of the largest on the south Costa Blanca.

There are a many Fiesta's (carnivals) held throughout the year which take place in the streets of Torrevieja, all of these are free. Some of the larger ones include:

Three Kings day (5th January) where there is a great party atmosphere with long lines of carnival floats weaving their way through the streets, sweets are tossed from the floats to the children watching.

Easter (Semana Santa) hosts a number of evening parades, from the sombre to the candle lit midnight parade, with good Friday being one of the most admired festivals on the Costa Blanca.

During early May the area by the Fairground and pier hosts the Annual May Fair (Feria de mayo), which is a week of Andalucían festivities. Here, bars and restaurants from the local area set up temporary marquees selling local, home cooked food such as paella and tapas. Many of these also set up a dance floor where you can watch the locals Flamenco dancing during the evenings. There is also a large stage where some of Spain's best live pop music can be heard. A great night out for all the family.

June sees the ‘Fallas' Festival where you can watch large effigies and bonfires being set alight all along the coast which creates quite a spectacle.

Halloween is increasingly more popular in the area and is celebrated with food and pumpkins much as we do in England.

There are a number of local and national holidays in Spain. On these days all shops will be closed although most bars and restaurants will still open.

Things to do and see in Torrevieja:

Torrevieja's harbour is home to around 300 fishing boats and over 700 private boats. It is a lovely place to have a drink and watch the sunset

In the main square near the centre of the Town you will find the Church of "la inmaculata conception". A beautiful church, especially worth a visit near Christmas when the whole square hosts a moving nativity scene and lit Christmas tree. Many of the towns Fiesta's (carnivals) also start or finish near the Church.

The ‘Recinto de las Eras de la Sal' is an open air theatre which hosts a number of plays as well as some themed evenings with food, wine and dancing from around the World.

There is a ‘floating museum' on a submarine located by the pier in Torrevieja. This is free and information on board is both in Spanish and English. Well worth a visit especially for those who have never been in a submarine before.

The Museum of Sea and Salt (Museo del mar y de Sal) can be found by walking along ‘Caballero De Rodas' and turning down ‘Patricio Perez'. A great place to learn about the Salt industry in the area.

The ‘Park of Nations' is found in the most unexpected place, right next to the N332 ! Not the obvious venue for peace and quiet, but it is a surprisingly tranquil and beautiful place. There is a lake which has islands creating ‘Europe' and is surrounded by landscaped green areas and palm trees. A small zoo type area and children's playground can be found towards the back of the park, and the best bit is that it's free.

Located along the North side of the Harbour lies the Harbour wall, or pier, where you can take a stroll. You will see the statue of the Fisherman lost at sea and then halfway along you are greeted by the Fisherman's wife waving him off on his final journey. While walking along the promenade you will see another statue of the Fisherman's wife sitting on a white bench waiting for news of his return.

For those shoppers amongst you, Habenaras shopping centre, opened in 2005, has shops to suit everyone and if you want to take the weight off your feet there are cafe's and tapas bars situated on the top level.

There are a number of golf courses within 30 minutes drive of Torrevieja. Pick up one of the English Free news papers like the ‘Coastrider ‘or ‘Round Town News‘ (also available online)while you are there for more information.
