Lure Minnows Ice
Will a northland puppet minnow work for largemouths through thr ice?
For those of u who dont know, the puppet minnow is a about two and a half inch long horizontal minnow with hooks on each side and a treble hook on the bottom. I'm fishing in my pond with largemouth 12-20 inches long and I'm wondering if this lure will work. there is no basic structer except for various clumps of weeds and algy. Also what other lures will work?
Generally, Puppet Minnows (and Rapala Ice Jigs- kinda the same thing), don't work well for Bass under the ice. Could you catch one using it? Sure! But it isn't a high "percentage lure". When the water gets that cold, Bass tend to go into a "hibernation-like mode" and won't chase ANY forage.....
Out of all the times I've been Ice fishing, (which is numerous), I've only caught 2 Bass, (and they were on accident).
I suggest you try Live Fathead Minnows or Shiners. I think you'll have better luck with bait...
(However, the Puppet works well for Pike, Walleye, and Jumbo Perch.)
Make sure to check your local laws if you plan on keeping any Bass. Here in MN Bass are off- limits during this period.

Ice Fishing Lures Demystified - Tips To Make A Good Selection
One of the most challenging to decide on when you are on a fishing adventure is what kind of ice fishing lure to utilize in different lakes. Although there are fast and easy way to determine which ice fishing lure to use on a specific lake to catch a specific fish there are still basic factors fishermen take into consideration when choosing an ice fishing lure which will surely attract the fish they want. Here are some usual choices when looking for a lure: hard bodies, spoons, fake worms and bugs and also a bait-type lures, these will allow to change from one lure to another. No matter where you fish one key type of an ice fishing lure is the jigs but this is not effective when the bottom contains a lot of vegetation and debris.
For the bigger species like pike and bass, live bait and minnows are usually the best type for this kind of fish and most experienced ice anglers will approve to this. If you are having a hard time using a live minnows in a cold temperature you can use frozen minnows, bloodworms or worms which can be bought from bait stores they are an effective addition to as stand alone bait or a lure.
Getting the fish in mood to eat the bait is one of the things an ice fisher must know. Usually the fish stays in the deeper parts of the lake because it is warmer this happens during cold, winter weathers. During this kind of climate the fish has a slower metabolism and moves slowly which affects the amount of food they eat. It does not matter if you use hard bodies or spoon as bait as long as they your ice fishing lure is colorful and shiny it will surely attract the fish. When ice anglers are fishing in dark or clear waters they prefer to use colorful or even glow in the dark baits to attract fish.
In waters that has a lot of wreckage and weeds a particular ice fishing lure should be considered and as well as a jigging method. You can drop a bright colored jig in the middle of the weedbed when fishing in this kind of water. When there is are vegetation under the water place a worm or a larva on the hook and avoid any jigging motion because it will eventually hang up in the reeds, submerged logs and weeds and debris. Ice fishing lure such as spoon and tails are not effective in this kind of waters because they might end up snagging on the upper edges of the weeds which is much higher from where the fish are eating.
