I want to become an electrical apprentice in the IBEW (Tampa Fl). How long does the hiring process take.?

Also what does this mean:

Local Union Info

Posted: August 5, 2009

Presently there are 150 inside wireman on book 1 and 350 on book 2 there are 20 lineman and 5 equipment operators on book 1 and 10 on book 2 . There are 14 line apprentices out. Teledata has 6 C-Techs and 1 apprentice out.

Also given the current economic conditions are there many union guys out of work in FL?

I am an IBEW electrician in Illinois. To answer your questions: Book 1 refers to the number of Tampa IBEW electricians that are laid off at the present time and Book 2 is the number of IBEW electricians from other local IBEW's that are out of work and are trying to get a job in Tampa. Book 1 guys are the first to get to go back to work in their "home" local. The linemen are the guys who work on the power lines, inside wiremen are the guys who work in new construction or remodels in car plants, factories, etc. Teledata are the phone workers and guys who install computer cables in the factories.

Apprentices are usually the first to get back to work if there is a slow down. In my local right now we have 160 journeymen wireman, 30 apprentices, and 40 Book 2 guys on one job.

Even though the jobs are slow right now I would still urge you to apply for the apprenticeship. Things will get better.

MGCCC Lineman Apprentice Program

The steps outlined to becoming an Electrician Apprentice

If you’re reading this article, you’ve decided you want a guide to find out how to get on your way to becoming an electrician, of course, the first step is to actually become an electrician apprentice. This is a very promising field to go into, as a survey done by the government has said that there will be a viable need for electricians in a large amount for at least the next ten years. We have to remember that everything in our world has become electronic. Robots are making cars, everything is focused around electricity. The demand for electricians will only become greater as time goes on. So feel safe in choosing this as your profession. However, as with all things, you need a quick guide to becoming an electrician. Here it is.

Step 1

You will first have to apply for an electrician apprenticeship through the National Electrical Contractors Association. You can find their details easily on the internet or through your yellow pages. During this program you will learn various skills that you will need to become a very good electrician apprentice. By the end of it you will be able to lay, measure, and install testing wires, switches and outlets. As you progress through the apprenticeship your tasks will become more complex so be prepared to learn a lot.

Step 2

You will then have to choose your specialty, a few examples of what specialty an electrician can become is a lineman, residential wireman or a VDV installer technician. You will need to find out which program is suitable for you via the National Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee, they are also known as NJATC. There are many branches of the NJATC scattered across the United States and even Canada if you are interested.

Step 3

You will need to finish the required coursework. Usually there will be 144+ hours of classroom time that you will have to attend. This is an obligation that is required from all apprentice electricians. You will also need a minimum of 2000 on the job hours of training.

Step 4

Once you have made sure that you have qualified, you need to get a license to become an electrician. Depending on the state you live in, you might have different licensing requirements. You will have to check for your requirements individually. Generally, however, you need to pass a state exam and have your apprenticeship completed.

Step 5

Once you have gotten your license and completed your electrician apprenticeship, you can finally apply for a job with a contractor in your area or whoever you would like to work. Remember to write an impressive CV that will make you stand out from the rest of the people.

Becoming an electrician is not a easy path to take, so make sure you are a motivated, hard-working individual who is prepared to work with tough difficult working situations. While rewarding, it is difficult work. So keep safe and make sure that becoming an electrician is the right job for you.
