Art sees the light in the midst of the dark ages?
During the Middle Ages--that is, from about A.D. 600 to about A.D.1350--art and architecture in Europe was devoted almost exclusively to serving the Christian church. Cathedrals, those soaring monuments to Christianity that took hundreds of years to build and combined architecture, sculpture, engineering, stained glass and faith. Art sees the light in the midst of the dark ages. So, what was dark about the dark ages?
The term The Dark Ages was originally coined by the Italian scholar Petrarch (Francesco Petrarca) in the 1330s.
It was intended as a sweeping criticism of the character of Late Latin literature.
Later, historians expanded the term to refer to the transitional period between Classical Roman Antiquity and the High Middle Ages.
They included not only the lack of Latin literature, but also a lack of contemporary written history, general demographic decline, limited building activity and material cultural achievements in general.
This is a great question, one that had me interested enough to research to find the reason myself.
There is more to read about the term at:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Dark_Ages
I also found another article at All About History and it says something quiet different (it too is really interesting):
