Lighted Wall
How difficult is it to remove wall-mounted light and replace with a ceiling-mounted light?
My 1910 home has several wall-mounted lights. They drive me nuts because they have no wall switches, and so you must fumble around in the dark to switch the light on at the fixture itself.
I would like to convert these wall mounted lights to ceiling mounted lights, complete with wall switches. I know you can't give me a step by step, but could you tell me how difficult this might be and if it's something a homeowner can do by themselves?
I'm working on the assumption that you have access to the attic.
1) Turn off power to wall mounted fixtures.
2) Remove them.
3) Cap off wires and install blank plate.
4) Cut hole in ceiling for electrical box.
5) Cut hole in wall for switch box.
6) Run wire from where you are going to pick up your power to new switch location from attic, down wall after you drill 3/4" hole in top plate of wall. Make sure you stay INSIDE the wall. With it, run an additional wire that will go from switch to new fixture.
7) Install electrical boxes.
Install switch after you make the connections you have to make.
9) Install fixture.
10) Restore power.

Halogen flood light fixtures and Halogen line voltage fixtures have a much longer life than traditional bulbs, and are more efficient and concentrated light with safer byproducts than fluorescent lighting.
