Light Irish Shamrock
Americans and St. Patrick's Day?
I am an irish boy. We, as a people are pretty normal, irish people have jobs, drive cars and do normal things. So why on st patricks day do americans drink till theyre pissed, dye rivers green, say top o the mornin and use four leaf clovers. Not one of these is irish, does this not annoy anyone else? the day is religious, st patrick introduced christianity to ireland. He used shamrock, not a four leaf clover to symbolise the holy trinity . I just think that this puts a bad light on the irish people. We are not alcoholics, or leprechauns orwe dont wear all green. Any comments???

At the same time it is nice to see that we are universally popular. I just wish they would get to know the real Ireland instead of Oireland.
Creed: There are not more Irish people in America then there are in Ireland. Being of Irish descent is not the same as being Irish. By all means be proud of your heritage but it is quite frustrating when I say I'm Irish and have an American say "OMG so am I, when did your family emigrate". The term has completely been hi-jacked and in order for me to now say I'm Irish I have to say that I am from Ireland instead.

Realpagan: That's the thing though, we aren't living in the 1900s now. Transfer of information is easy. An American can get all the real information on Ireland with one click yet they insist on clinging to a false heritage.
Just to point out a few of your errors. Gaelic is many languages, it is Breton, Irish, Scottish, Welsh, Cornish etc. There is no language called Gaelic. It is either called Irish or Gaeilge.
How are the Irish considered extremely lucky? The reason most of your families emigrated was because of the Great Famine. Of course there was also the issue of being sold as slaves (not indentured servants) to the Caribbean, the states and everywhere else. I needn't mention the whole, being taken over by the British. Hmmm what about the decades of terrorism and violence in the North, the clerical sex abuse scandal and the fact that right at this moment we have 430,000 out of work which is a figure of 12.7% and an all time high.
The whole point of the shamrock was that Patrick supposedly used it to explain the Holy Trinity. Therefore the whole four leaf clover thing is making a mockery of that.
I have met "Irish Americans" who have actually learned about the Ireland of today and I have a lot of time for them but the vast majority think of Ireland as a magical land that is frozen in time from when their ancestors left. They think that we all live in cottages, eating potatoes an drive the donkey and cart to the local wheat mill to buy our bread. It's insulting and it makes a mockery of everything Irish.
You wouldn't go up to your 20 year old brother and talk to him like he's 3 yet that is essentially what you are doing to your supposed Irish "family".
