Lamp Wall Light
You walk into a brightly lit room, you flick the wall switch and turn off the lamp. Where does the light go?
Does it just go back into the lamp? Does it just stop coming out of the lamp and the existing light then escapes into oblivion at the speed of light? How does the light in the room when you turn off the lamp know that you turned off the lamp?
The light escapes into oblivion at the speed of light. Although many light photons may reflect off of shiny surfaces several times before they find a surface that will absorb them all will be gone in less than a split second. The lamp filament will quickly cool down and stop emitting new photons. The lamp 'knows' that you have stopped its supply of electricity (also at the speed of light!) and the darkened room 'knows' that there will be no more photons to light the room.
