Kings - $19.99 Adapted from the stage play The Kings of the Kilburn high Road by Jimmy Murphy, writer/director Tom Collins' incisive examination of the Irish immigrant experience stars Colm Meany, Donal O'Kelly, Brendan Conroy, Donncha Crowley, and Barry Barnes as a group of longtime friends unable to let go of the past. When their mate Jackie (Sean O' Tarpaigh) dies suddenly under a subway car, a group of old Irish friends now living in London come together to celebrate his life. Thirty years ago this crew from Connemara was young and full of hope, but these days most of them have sunken into a dire world of drink and depression. Joe (Meany) may have proven the most financially successful of the group, but that doesn't necessarily mean that he has overcome his demons- he simply chooses to indulge in expensive cocaine rather than cheap liquor. Jap (O'Kelly) and Git (Conroy) largely view the world through the bottom of a bottle, Mairtin (Barnes) is struggling to wean himself from spirits and hold on to his family, and contented vegetable vendor Shay (Crowley) has finally embraced his lowered expectations. The only one who doesn't seem steeped in nostalgia is Jackie's father Micil (Peadar O'Treasaigh) - who has recently arrived from Ireland to claim his son's body. Bangkok’s go go bars for men are the stuff that dreams are made of. It’s where you can easily find booze at really affordable prices as well as the company of beautiful women. There are 3 red light districts with go go bars: Patpong, Nana and Soi Cowboy. It’s best to stay in a guest friendly hotel near the red light districts. The reason is guest friendly hotels won’t charge you a joiner fee for bringing a bar girl back to your room. Don’t worry, guest friendly hotels are clean – matter of fact some of them are the most popular hotels in Bangkok.
Patpong Red Light District
Patpong is the birthplace of Bangkok’s go go bar culture. Some of the most popular go go bars in Patpong belong to the King’s Castle and Queen’s Castle entertainment group. King’s Castle has 3 go go bars. Be aware that King’s Castle 3 have all transvestites working inside, while the others have a small number mixed in with real ladies. Best to ask the Mamasan to figure out which is which.
Nana Red Light District
This areas claim to fame is Nana Entertainment Plaza. The entrance is on Nana Soi 4, right across from the Nana Hotel and its parking lot (a popular place to pick up freelance prostitutes). NEP is a small 3 floor building with an open courtyard in the center filled with bars. Surrounding these bars are popular go go bars like Hollywood, Rainbows and Angel Witch. There’s a big lady boy scene here too and you’ll find them at Obsessions and Cascades.
Soi Cowboy Red Light District
Located in the pricey neighborhood of Sukhumvit, Soi Cowboy is the choice of expats in Thailand. Having recently renovated the neon lights are once again glowing brighter and its popularity is reviving after a long dry spell. Soi Cowboy is where you’ll find Long Gun, Rawhide and Cowboys, just a few of the long standing go go bars that pack a large crowd every night. My personal favorite however, is Spice Girls. Many of Soi Cowboy’s go go bars have happy hour drink specials. So it’s a great place to start the night out with a bang.
If you ever want to take a bar girl back to your hotel for an overnight sex romp you first have to negotiate with her on the price. Usually for overnight or “long time” is about 3000THB to 5000THB depending on your bargaining skills and even on how she feels. After you’ve settled on a price you will then have to pay a bar fine, 500THB to bar management, and only then can she be off with you.
