A Quick Review Of The American Classic - To Kill A Mockingbird
The majority of students in America at some time in their school career will be made to study the classic American tale "To Kill A Mockingbird." Whether these students are interested enough to understand it is another matter! I remember first reading the book and seeing the movie in the 9th grade, and I recently saw the movie for the second time as an adult so I thought I'd give a quick review.
I thought the story would seem different to me now that I'm older, but much to my surprise it had much the same effect as it did when I was younger and I enjoyed it once again.
The story starts in the town of Maycomb, Alabama and is set during the American depression. It was a time of deep racial division and predjudice. The story chronicles the lives of a southern family led by Atticus Finch, a lawyer, and his son Jem and daughter Scout. The story centers around the arrest and trial of a young black man that gets accused of rape by a white woman. Much of the story is seen through a child's point of view. The movie reveals the tough issues of race, class, and justice.
Much like life in small towns, the story starts slowly and builds into the heart of the tale. It starts out with young Scout reluctantly going off to her first year of school. Her and her brother Jem play and fantasize about going to sneak a peak at the infamous town boogeyman, Boo Radley. After much talk and no action, Jem gets curious enough and gets the courage to go see Boo Radley for himself.
All the while, the town is getting geared up for the trial of the accused rapist Tom Robinson and Atticus Finch is appointed as his lawyer. The kids continue to play in their own world, oblivious the the serious situations around them until things get so hot that they become involved in events beyond their understanding.
The town's seedy dark side is revealed by the subsequent events of the trial. Atticus Finch, a rare honest man and lawyer, stands up for the truth and what is right. He goes against overwhelming odds to try to save the man he knows is innocent of the charges. Through the most difficult trial of his life, Atticus persists until the very end.
Young Scout sums up one of the main messages of the story by saying, "most people are essentially kind when you really see them." Through many twists and turns, the story can make you laugh, cry, and learn a lesson all at the same time. A great classic and an excellent read, the To Kill A Mockingbird book still remains socially relevant as much today as it was in 1960 when the book first came out.
