Can mobile locksmiths cut a car key even if you don't have the key codes?
My husband has lost his car keys and we don't have a spare. We also don't have the key codes for the car. (Luckily the car is parked at home).
We've spoken to a mobile locksmith who says that he can cut and program a key (its a transponder type) for £95 but I can't beleive this - the Vauxhall Dealership wanted £350 for a full lock set and keys + coding!!! The car is a Mk2 Vauxhall Astra.
Has anyone had a car key cut by a mobile locksmith without having the key codes? I'm worried that this guy is either telling porkies or making promises he can't keep. We really need the car back on the road tommorrow.
hey, if he ends up figuring out a way to do it, more power to him. Be sure to tell him up front, that you're not going to pay him until you have the set of keys that both work to start the car.
dealers and mechanics are not interested in programming small electronics like keys or radios, they would rather just replace whole unit rather then saving them.
locksmiths actually just do locks day in and day out, and automotive keying and locks are a big part of their business.
It is very possible that they can do the job and/or have paid subscriptions to access car manufacturers' key code databases as security professionals.

Oldsmobile vehicles overview and locksmiths.
Oldsmobile were first manufactured by the Olds Motor Works in Lansing, Michigan, a company founded by Ransom E. Olds in 1897. In 1901, the company produced 425 cars, making it the first high-volume automobile manufacturer of the day. Olds became the top selling car company in the United States for a few years. Ransom Olds left the company in financial difficulties and formed the REO Motor Car Company. The last Curved Dash Olds was made in 1907. General Motors purchased the company in 1908.
The 1901 to 1904 Curved Dash was the first mass-produced car, made from the first automotive assembly line, an invention that is often discredited to Henry Ford and the Ford Motor Company. After Olds sold the company in 1899, it was renamed Olds Motor Works and moved to a new plant in Detroit. By March 1901, the company had a whole line of models ready for mass production. Unfortunately, a mistake by a worker caused the factory to catch fire, and it burned to the ground, with all of the prototypes destroyed. The only car that survived the fire was a Curved Dash prototype, which was wheeled out of the factory by two workers while escaping the fire. A new factory was built, and production of the Curved Dash commenced.
