Deciding which sorority fits me???!?

I want to pledge and I am torn between alpha kappa alpha and delta simga theta. I have researched other soroities besides these two but as far as community service is concerned, these two sororities just seemed to do more for the community, but i'm torn because i can't seem to figure out where my heart is. My mothe who is a delta and my sister who has just crossed AKA are very happy with the decisions they have made and i just don't want to have any regrets. I was wondering from a standpoint of anyone who is in one of these sosorities how did they decide where they wanted to be and if it was the right deicision to make. I'm just tired of hearing about all of the stereotypes of AKA's being sadity with long hair and light skin, and Delta's are "hood" and will beat a b***h ass if they need to. Any advice?

I am in a sorority I went through formal recruitment. I am taking it you are going through informal. My recommendation would be to spend time with both of the sororities before making your decision. When you join a sorority they are your sisters and it is a lifetime commitment. You want to make sure that you bond with the girls and that your not picking opne for either reason. Disregard your mother and sister, (my mom and sister are Delta Gammas and I am an AOPi) and follow where you fill most comfortable. Think about where you can wake up on a Saturday morning go to the living room, without makeup and just relax. Don't focus on stereotypes, every sorority has them and they are usually false.

as far as community service, I would say both do a significant amount of community service and if you find that one doesn't focus on community service enough, but you like the girls better Pick that one. There are so many community service programs on college campuses: go to your Social Work office, Habitat for Humanity, Red Cross groups. You can find alot of community service in and outside of your sorority.

A sorority is a great thing, it has changed my life. I have met my bridesmaids, best friends, and the girls I will always call my sisters. Good luck and you will make the right decision.

AOPi lovin,
Rachael

Alpha Kappa Alpha is the first Greeklettered sorority established and incorporated by African American college women. The sorority was founded on January 15, 1908, at Howard University in Washington, D.C., by a group of nine students, led by Ethel Hedgeman Lyle. Forming a sorority broke barriers for African American women in areas where little power or authority existed due to a lack of opportunities for minorities and women in the early twentieth century. Alpha Kappa Alpha was incorporated on January 29, 1913. Consisting of collegeeducated women of African, Caucasian, Asian, Native American, and Hispanic descent, the sorority serves through a membership of more than 200,000 women in over 975 chapters in the United States and several other countries. Women may join through undergraduate chapters at a college or university, or through a graduate chapter after acquiring a college degree. After the organizations establishment over a century ago, Alpha Kappa Alpha has helped to improve social and economic conditions through community service programs.
