Making Tobacco Bright (Hardcover) $150.1 In her sweeping history of the American tobacco industry, Barbara Hahn traces the emergence of the tobacco plant`s many varietal types, arguing that they are products not of nature but of economic relations and continued and intense market regulation. Hahn focuses her study on the most popular of these varieties, Bright Flue-Cured Tobacco. First grown in the inland Piedmont along the Virginia--North Carolina border, Bright Tobacco now grows all over the world, primarily because of its unique -- and easily replicated -- cultivation and curing methods. Hahn traces the evolution of technologies in a variety of regulatory and cultural environments to reconstruct how Bright Tobacco became, and remains to this day, a leading commodity in the global tobacco industry. This study asks not what effect tobacco had on the world market, but how that market shaped tobacco into types that served specific purposes and became distinguishable from one another more by technologies of production than genetics. In so doing, it explores the intersection of crossbreeding, tobacco-raising technology, changing popular demand, attempts at regulation, and sheer marketing ingenuity during the heyday of the American tobacco industry. Combining economic theory with the history of technology, Making Tobacco Bright revises several narratives in American history, from colonial staple-crop agriculture to the origins of the tobacco industry to the rise of identity politics in the twentieth century. |

Bright Leaf - Fullscreen B&W $24.99 Bright Leaf, a sprawling saga of the tobacco industry in North Carolina, began as a novel by Foster Fitzsimmons, a native Carolinian who for many years taught at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill's theatre department. The film version of Bright Leaf has been simplified and reshaped to serve as a traditional Gary Cooper vehicle. Cooper stars as tenant farmer Brant Royle, who after being driven from his home town by autocratic tobacco tycoon Major Singleton (Donald Crisp) returns in triumph with a revolutionary cigarette-making machine. Royle's streamlined techniques soon drive Singleton out of business. Margaret Singleton (Patricia Neal), Royle's old flame, agrees to marry him to save her father from ruin--whereupon the Major commits suicide. The vengeful Margaret then does everything she can to destroy Royle. The question remaining: can Brant Royle save himself and find ultimate happiness with his true love, Sonia Kovac (Lauren Bacall)? Also appearing in Bright Leaf are Jack Carson as Royle's flamboyant business partner Chris Malley and Jeff Corey as John Barton, the inventor of the "miracle" cigarette-making apparatus. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi |

Bright Leaves (DVD) $32.9 Ross McElwee directs this autobiographical documentary about his family`s roots in the tobacco business in North Carolina. Taking a sabbatical from his home in Boston, he offers a culturally interesting history of the South as viewed through the biggest, wealthiest tobacco enterprises. Meanwhile, he examines a Hollywood movie that was based on the same topic, BRIGHT LEAF, the 1950 film set in 1894`s tobacco-ruled South, which stars Gary Cooper and Lauren Bacall and was directed by Michael Curtiz (CASABLANCA). Though McElwee doesn`t have firm proof, he speculates that the film is actually based on his great grandfather`s rise and fall in the tobacco industry, and he splices in segments of that film to illustrate some of his historical points. It goes without saying that BRIGHT LEAVES` dominant purpose, and strongest message, is anti-smoking, and in its grimmer moments the film shows hospitalized victims of smoking-related illnesses, and conducts interviews with those who have lost dear ones to lung cancer. Packaged as an exploratory and educational dabble into McElwee`s past, this documentary is enjoyable and enlightening. |

Why the Future of the Music Industry is Bright... For You
Advantages of Industrial Touch Screen Monitors
Touch screen technology has been with us since the early 1970s and have become increasingly popular in recent years with the advent of mobile phones and pocket computer systems.
Touch screens are now everywhere with ATMs, ticket machines and information points utilizing them. They are a key asset in industrial computing too as touch screen monitors offer certain advantages over conventional computer screens.
The most obvious advantage of touch screen monitors is that they act as both an input and output device. Using a graphical user interface (GUI) there is no need for a separate monitor, keyboard and mouse as the touch screen monitor acts as all three.
In industrial applications, touch screen monitors also have the advantage of being more robust than a conventional CRT (cathode ray tube) or LCD monitor. Touch screens are often built with durability in mind and many are resistant to industrial contaminants such as water, dirt, oil and grease.
Many touch screen monitors boast IP65 and NEMA 4 ratings allowing the monitors to be washed-down and protected against, electrical surges, physical impact, temperature extremes, theft, tampering and airborne debris.
Touch Screen monitors can also reduce the size of a computer system, without separate peripherals and all those wires, they can also be mounted on walls or on the back of machines.
They can also be house in industrial computer enclosures - these afford added protection from spillages, knocks, bangs and even explosive atmospheres. Many touch screen devices are used where standard computer equipment is just not practical such as when a machine is positioned outside or left unattended.
There are different technologies behind touch screen monitors such as resistive touch screens, capacitive systems, infrared and surface acoustic wave technology. The types of touch screen
Differ in their efficiency at reading a touch and the clarity of the monitor. Some of the systems are also more susceptible to scratches and contaminants.
In selecting a touch screen the most important things to remember is where the screen will be placed, what applications it will be used for, how durable does it need to be and how clear or bright does the monitor have to be.
