How can I make my own 100m sprint stopwatch LED number display?
I want to make a decently priced jumbo LED number display for a sprint event, similar in size to a basketball scoreboard. But unfortunately, decent sized ones cost well over $1,000 and well out of my $50 budget. So I'm thinking of making my own display out of a lot of individual LED lights. You know how calculator and digital wristwatch displays have digits displayed using 7 segment numbers? Like this: http://blog.makezine.com/huge_7segment_display.jpg
I want to make a composite 7 segment display that can display 4 digits; s s:ms ms. The segments should be 30 LEDs in size. So does anyone even have the slightest clue to what I'm saying here? Most of my questions that I don't know the answer to can never be answered here.
You may need a bit more than your budget, however it is not impossible to achieve. First of all, you will need to use existing modules - because to design and have your own printed circuit boards will already exceed your budget. Have a look at futurlec in this link...
They also have a variety of other similar displays. This gives you an idea of costs. I have bought from Futurlec and find them to be quite competitive on pricing, but the range of products can be limited. There are also smaller 4 digit displays. You say 30 LED's per segment? You can also reduce the number by using high brightness led's, and also by providing a shade - much like the way traffic lights are shaded.
Then you need some circuit to send the right signals to the display boards. What will you be using to provide the timing that you want to display? I have designed and built interfaces between Omega timing systems and various display boards like these for a swimming pool (30 yrs ago). Usually I use a small microprocessor programmed to convert the timing system outputs to the multi-line display board. In this case a 7 segment driver, with latches to store the number for each digit.
For another option, you can look at some of the cheaper scrolling display boards such as in the second link. Some of these though are only pre-programmed, so that you need a computer connected to change the display.
