What you for sure should get is Xbox LIVE. It costs $60 a year(you can also pay $8 a month or $30 every 3 months, but the full year is a better deal), but is absolutely amazing, especially with certain games. But first, you have to set up a network connection to your 360, and there are plenty of sites to tell you how. If you do get LIVE, I would also suggest a headset so you can talk/smack talk to your friends/enemies.
For games, there are TONS coming out right before the holiday season. It completely depends on what you like. The huge game this season is definitely Modern Warfare 2. This is a FPS shooter placed in modern times and has outstanding Xbox LIVE.
Another game that's gained quite a bit of popularity is Left 4 Dead 2. This is when zombies basically take over. You are the survivor and you have to fight through hordes to get to safety (or die, whichever. o.0) There is a lot of game modes on Xbox LIVE and pretty awesome.
Also, if you're into sports, this is also the time of year when quite a few come out. The newer ones are like 2k10(Basketball) and Madden 10.
Again, it totally depends what you are interested in. Racing games - GRID 2. RPG - Assassin's Creed 2 or Fable 2(you can buy this from the XBox Marketplace). Just look around for reviews and what interests you. Definitely check out the Grand Theft Auto series (preferably the fourth one). These are a bit mature(drugs, tons of violence, alcohol, prostitutes.
